Towbar and Bike rack

Surprize

I have seen a lot of removable towbars that don't get removed because it's too much hassle to fit and remove all the time (Unless it's one of those electric types of the spring loaded manual release types...)

Wife's car has option 1 and its removable with a simple key / twist action, but... its probably spent 1 week off the car compared to the 5 yrs on it.

My view is that with any minor rear impact the towbar is going to soak up some of the damage (And cause more to the creep that caused the incident) and if its a small enough bump the goose neck may be the only part that needs to be replaced.

It depends on the vehicle you putting the tow bar on? For sporty sedans and hatches option 1 is better as the tow bar is removable and has a cleaner look. Option 2 would be best fitted to larger vehicles.

I have a Golf 7 GTI and the fixed tow bar wasn't even an option because of the way the exhaust is designed on the car.

Check the exhaust positioning of your car... if it is likely to blow directly onto the rack and specifically the tyre/wheel, this has been known to damage tyres and carbon rims. In which case Option 2 would allow you to put a spacer in and raise the rack height so the exhaust is not an issue.

Good point. I totally fried a wheel driving back from Sun City a couple of years back!

I then has a special removable fitting made for my exhaust tail pipe which directs the flow downwards and saves the wheels!

R300 for custom Stainless exhaust bend outlet to the side behind the wheel here in Durban from Powerflow.

Good thing to have done "in case".
