“As we’re working on model year 2018 and 2019, we are considering heavily investing into road disc,” said Andrew Juskaitis, global product marketing manager at Giant Bicycle, title sponsor of the Giant-Alpecin squad. “All of our product development is with road disc in mind. With this development, we need to have an emergency meeting very quickly to discuss if we’re going to continue pursuing our road disc program, because we always rely on our team to prove our product first. That’s how we operate; if the team doesn’t race it, for the most part, we’re not going to sell it to consumers. So we need to have a very serious discussion, immediately, to determine how this ruling will affect future product development for Giant.”

So just because their world tour team doesn't use it, nobody can? Well that goes against your statement that its good for amateurs but not the Pro pelaton. Good thing that you prefer green bikes :)

Just shared this for overall perspective.

I think it's awesome of us amateurs, yes, patch'

And, then again, I don't spend 128 days racing per year in a sardine formation at high speeds navigating thousands of kms across Euroland, mostly

Chainrings hurt, but it is essential to bike riding

Disc brakes not (essential)

Not having a go. Just saying that's it's crap for us if all we get is what they get.... Where like you pointed out we could benefit more than them.

Basically by their own logic Giant should build sub 6.8kg bikes either ????

Is this the same argument you came up with when MTB disks were being introduced?

Sorry son,I was an early adopter. Had Magura HS-33 before then (come on go google em).

To be honest I really couldn't see the point of Disc brakes back then when Shimano XTR / XT V-brakes were so easy to maintain and had plenty power. 4years in Europe changed my mind. Mud glorious mud. Never felt the need for discs when descending the Tourmalet, or any other Pyranean mountain pass or Alpine pass, even in the wet.

But i Switched to Hope brakes in 2000 and then XTR and had the scars to prove it. Actually nicked my heel on the hot rotor when my Shimano clipless pedal retain mechanism failed. Heel cup on funky Northwave mtb shoes were cut right through to the flesh. Only just nicked my heel but it was a nice clean cut and stung like 100 bee stings. and those NW had plastic heel cups.

I have a lot of respect for disc brakes

Its just one opinion and one brands view. Its not written into law. They're just saying they sell what they race, thats all.

Agree

Interesting how it all works though hey from a product value chain / marketing supply chain / corporate model point of view

Saw a CAAD 12 today with diskies

Yum yum

So where does this leave those of us who sold or normal road bikes for a disk brake version?  I am by no means a PRO but would like to race as a licensed rider.

Despite numerous crashes I have never had a disk brake related injury on my MTB - bike has landed on me a few times too. Plenty of pedal scars and chain ring puncture wounds though.

I think part of the pressure to introduce them is based on the MTB experience with wider rims and composites. A rim brake restricts rim development surely?

Maybe to put things into perspective, is there somebody who can complete the following:

Number of confirmed disk brake related injuries in World Tour Pelaton in last 12 months: ......?

Number of confirmed disk brake related deaths in World Tour Pelaton in last 12 months: ......?

Number of confirmed motocycle related injuries in World Tour Pelaton in last 12 months: ......?

Number of confirmed motocycle related deaths in World Tour Pelaton in last 12 months: ......?

Number of disk brake related actions/sanctions/bans the UCI has taken in the last 12 months:..... ?
