Patchelicious Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 I think those marks on the rim can be a result of very low tyre pressure.Do you ride alot on tar as well?Perhaps as with the chain, a corrosive solvent was used to clean the rims ????
JXV Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 The chain looks like failure due to corrosion, the cycling just finished it off. I have heard of chains breaking in multiple areas after being soaked in degreaser. Is why I recommend to use only simple non-agressive solvents like paraffin to clean chains. Water based degreasers can stay inside the links and cause corrosion. The side olates and pins are likely dissimilar metals. Corrosion between these dissimilar materials in the press-fit crevices between these parts could produce metal oxides that place additional stress on the material, eventually causing cracks. There is also a mechanism called stress corrosion cracking whereby certain metals, on exposure to corrodents while under stress ( such as a press-fit joint) can cause rapidly propagating cracks. Stainless steels (as used in some chain sideplates) are known for this on exposure to chloride (sea) salts. OP uses the nom-de-plume 'Surfer'.... makes me wonder if this bike spends time at the coast. The chain and rim damage could both originate from repeated exposure to sea water or spray. intern Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 When buying SRAM chains it is packed in a plastic holder. I know that when I bought one of the chains the last time (not sure if it this was this one), the chain was only packed in a normal plastic bag with no chain links. Could it be that it is not a genuine SRAM chain but a copy? Yes, I regularly degrease the chain in a solvent of some description, but has been doing that for years with SRAM chains. Regarding the rim, never ridden the rim without a tire. Been using STANS. I believe that over the years it started to corrode where the valve enters the rim.Doubt it, not much to gain in copying an inexpensive component; also, a chain in a bag is OEM packaging (distinct from retail packaging). You get Shimano chains like that, too - no point putting it in expensive packaging for a bike manufacturer.
JXV Posted April 20, 2016 Posted April 20, 2016 After reading reading all the comments I believe I know what happened As I mentioned before, I use two chains and the chains is not old or worn. Normally after washing (degreasing) the chain, I will leave it in the sun to dry. This specific chain was left outside for a week (forgot about it since I replaced it with the 2nd chain, first time this happened). In this week it got some rust on the surface. I used a mix of degreasing solvent and some Q rust-off solvent to remove the surface rust. I soaked it for about 5 minutes. Never used the Q rust-off solvent on a chain before.,After lubing it I cycle for about 1 km when this happened. it has to be the Q rust-off solutionAaaah....if that rust remover/ degreaser mix contained either caustic soda (in some indusrrial degreasers) or phosphoric acid (common rust remover, even found in Coca-cola).... both could explain the cracking. Both would accelerate corrosion between dissimilar metals of the pins and side plates. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
SURFER Posted April 21, 2016 Author Posted April 21, 2016 The 2nd chain similar weardisk brakespressure 2 bar, a lot on tar and jeep track. My weight 85 kg My front rim also show similar marks (not so bad), never had flat tire on front Removed rim tape from back rim. Damage due to corrosion (my opinion)
Patchelicious Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Dude, 100% those rims have been ridden on....
SURFER Posted April 21, 2016 Author Posted April 21, 2016 Dude, 100% those rims have been ridden on....Then I do ride in my sleep
Wolf Lyle Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Those rims are forked !! looks like they were fished out the ocean
Patchelicious Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Then I do ride in my sleepJudging by those rims, chances seem high. If I were you, I would wear a helmet to bed going forward There is of course a chance that it was caused by something/somebody else, but those are exactly what rims look like when somebody rides on flat tyres...
Capricorn Posted April 21, 2016 Posted April 21, 2016 Then I do ride in my sleepdont suppose you ride through sand that reaches up to the spokes some times?

I stay in Slaapstad, maybe that is not a bad idea
