Bottelary hills

I guess the saying "you don't know what you are missing" goes both ways. People that ride Jonkershoek says that about those who do not, and those who have discovered life beyond it says that about those still riding there.

I'm sorry it sounds like you're stirring/trolling a bit, but Bottelary is the most boring trails I've ridden. I did the long (think red) route once, it was this endless riding through vineyards, no steep/technical climbs, and then a few odd km of singletrack that wasn't really exciting nor challenging.

Riding through vineyards is not mountain biking.

Jonkers on the other hand is ok. The few singletracks/downhill line make up for the boring climbs. I just wish it was more like Welvanpas, or rather, Welvanpas' downhill lines were more like Jonkers.

To use a mate of mine's expression - Jonkers can be summed up like this: The juice is worth the squeeze. AKA  the downs are worth enduring the slog to the top.

if you get there early enough you can ride up the lower 3 Canaries and avoid some of the boring climbs.

That's definitely my preferred method. Alternatively, instead of riding aaaaaalll the way to the end of the valley and going up the jeep track by the Waterfall Trail, you can hook a left just by the recently logged area and climb a much better jeeptrack section. Yeah, it has a few walking sections, but it's much better than the alternative.

Guess I need to ride there with people who know the area then. Still don't know where never ending story is - although I haven't looked too hard as I got a hole on my arse there the one day from hooking the saddle and decided I can't expose myself like that.

Don't stress - that sounds normal.

def worth going with a local. First time I went there a few years back, I rode around on the jeep tracks and couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about.

Never ending is okay. Not worth the squeeze though. Not nearly as much as Red Phoenix (aka Bennet's Red) or the Plumber or Canaries.

on the other hand Darren, I love Neverending and think it is well worth it.

I respect that there are riders who prefer to be on trails where no other trail users are permitted. Running in Newlands Forest, Lions Head or in the Tygerberg Reserve is bliss.  For some trail networks a shared model works and should be encouraged. Jonkers, Steilte, Meerendal, Delvera and Welvanpas are good examples of trails that are shared with huge success. Trails like Botlary and the balance of the Tygerberg MTB Club trails work for mtb only, although I personally would not mind sharing with trail runners as trail running has virtually zero impact on the trails, unlike the recent illegal dirt biking around Eden / G Spot lately.

Sharing resources is common. Imagine Morzine and Whistler being reserved for skiing only...

Different strokes. Suppose you like midget porn as well? No? Hmmm...

Anyway. Amped to see what the trails are like after the rains. Pity I won't be able to get there in the next couple weeks. Also AMPED to see what the new fire hut trail is like when it's done!

Yeah,

also curious to ride now after the rains. Hope there was some maintenance done. Haven't been there since beginning of Feb.
