I always clamp on the top tube, both my carbon road bike and alu mountain bike without issue.

Only time I clamp by seat tube is if there are external brake cables on a bike that am workin on and clamping on the top tube interferes.

Easiest way to stop bike rotating when held by the seat post is to remove the front wheel, especially when is a mountain bike when all the weight is in the fork and wheel

I use a yellow dust cloth between the clamps and the bike. Works a treat

Thanks, but the bike is not moving in the clamps, its the whole clamp arm that rotates in the holder, thinking about roughening up the interface to provide more grip or something like that.

Yip, prefer to remove pedals and wheels ASAP, but adjusting brake calipers and truing brake rotor need that front wheel in, and then you are spinning it too which doesn't help.

I just let the bike rotate, I can see if I try and tighten everything to lock the bike more level the stand won't be able to take it for long, things will break. I have to clamp my bike on the seat post because my frame doesn't have sufficient clamp space on the cross bar, in the middle of the crossbar is the ideal place from the perspective of the weight being balanced, less stress on the workstand.

OK, so mine is not defective, it is just the way they are.

as an alternative:

buy the "bike clamp" for a bike stand from CWC. I think it was roughly R600.

go to music world, buy lekker heavy duty speaker stands, you need a mate to take the other one and split the cost. I think a good set was roughly R1200.

now you have a solid solution for a bike stand.

If the bike spins that means you can lube just one small bit of the bike then give the bike a nice spin and when it comes to a standstill the whole bike will be lubed - job done
