"Not really...but it is friday ;)"

While trying to sort out my Di2 ultegra 11 speed (still hoping it is something as simple as loose bits in the lever)...i indicated that i am considering upgrading my trek to a newer bike with shimano 10 speed...like everyone keeps telling me that my 8 speed is no longer available from shimano...the same seems is going to apply to 10 speed...i was told that shimano have discontinued 10 speed components.

So a question...i purchased a 2015 model giant anthem brand new just in case the frame breaks at least i have a claim...which is almost a year old and has 324.8 km logged...do i now have to go to my insurance and inform them that if i fall and damage components..they might have to upgrade to 11 speed...considering in a years time the groupset should still be in good condition with around 600 km logged...but shimano 10 speed would have been discontinued.

I was told 8-9- and now 10 speed has been discontinued...there are still lots of spares for 8-9 speed...though limited you can still find them.

maybe not all is lost...thankfully there is a product called SRAM and they still seems to have 8-9-10 speed available.

Now i just need a 42 t middle chain ring and trek will be as good as new [emoji3]

What BS!  I know, it's Friday...

Shimano still has 8,9 and 10 speed parts available.  Sometimes they go out of stock, but they get them back in again.

If you've honestly been told that you need to buy 11sp because Shimano don't stock anything else, then you've been taken for a ride - certainly more of a ride than your 2015 Anthem has...  :whistling:

324 km in a year ?? that's less than a km a day. ?? dude??

And all 324km's are on the Durban beachfront, the poor neglected bike that he also called a marshmallow. :w00t:

Shimano is massive so its easy to get spares for all of their groupsets. Their local agents are not so pro-active but you also can interchange with many other groupsets parts. Having said that 8 speed is pushing it.

Try and get spares for a 12 year old car.....

...you'll hit 1000 posts and then i'm sure Rouxtjie has spares you can buy.

Speaking of which...Rouxtjie, what do you have on offer? I have just popped my cherry.

if insured, and you cannot find replacement parts then the shop will have to quote on new models... so it would mean your insurance paying out for a complete groupset or new bike...

The downside is you'll probably be under insured and they'll slash your payout...

I am looking after the anthem so when i am ready to upgrade to an 11/14 speed scott...it will still be in good condition so i can get some sort of return on investment ;)

"Upgrade" to a Scott??

Scott is a far superior bike...anthems are for people who cant afford decent bikes...it is the only reason i bought a marshmallow...which i am too scared to ride (hence the low mileage) because they crack up.

much like shimano...you cant mix components...otherwise they decline your warranty...due to being used outside of design norms...an excuse to get out of repaired thier crap design.

now to add salt to the wound...they dont sell spare parts...you have to replace the entire unit.

giant must come from the same shop as shimano.
