Also, what else do you take with you?

Apart from the foodstuffs as noted above, I have a pump, tool, tyre repair kit with bombs, main lights and the the small light already fixed to my helmet and the red tail light stuck to the bike. You look a bit of a poepol like that, but it's not a beauty pageant...

O yes, I also pack a buff for stage 2, the dust from the cars make breathing a bit difficult.

My backpack will weigh about 4kg with everything stuffed in.

One thing I still haven't decided on is whether to ride with clear or yellow lenses. Clear will work at night but not so nice in the sunlight, while yellow is easier on the eyes in the day time, but might have some drawbacks at night.

Question, will it help to wear 2 bib shorts over each other to be more gentle on your bum??

I don't think so. As the others have said, it might just bundle up and chafe somewhere else you don't want it to...

Teen die tyd moet jou gat al soos 'n leer vel voel...

I will try this week on my training rides, and see what the outcome is.

Rather you than me... I can (kind of) take a sore but, but if I chafe on soft areas somewhere I want to die. I've had some really painful chafe on my inguinal area before where the bib flexes and slides slightly when I flex my hip

If I  cycle past you, and you look like this     :excl:   . . . .

I'll know why . .

How do you communicate with your support vehicle, if at all?

Is there sufficient cellphone reception?

Or is it kind of a 'wait and see' scenario?

There is decent cell coverage till  the top of Us pass.

From Us pass till halfway it is very on/off  (mostly off) because of the mountains.

I also think it is because you're halfway between the Windhoek based cell area  and the Swakop/Walvis based cell area.  (could be wrong with regards to this)

From halfway it gets better again.

This was when I did it last 3-years back. Might be better  now.

We did the "wait and see" thing based on ETA of the rider.

But if something go wrong the wait can be long and you don't know why.

IH8MUD is correct. The best would be, however, due to the intermittent nature of the reception as from the halfway point (checkpoint 3) to not rely too much on reception. Especially not making any promises to wives and other concerned persons to keep them updated. It's also proposed that when sms and/or whatsapps are send while on the road, you type also the time of the message in the text as sometimes the messages only arrive hours later and not always in the correct chronological order. As from top of Us-pass to about 30 km before checkpoint 3 reception (and definitely data almost non-existent (nothing at all at checkpoint 2). As from Goanikontes (checkpoint 5) no problems really. Support vehicles can, in any event, not do a lot if there is an emergency between checkpoints (can't drive back against the route to assist) without special authorization.

I use Biogen Cyto-pro RS Marathon for the long rides and it works for me.

The plan is:

1 frozen bottle of Biogen Race mix to checkpoint one. I will fill it with water at CP1.

Another bottle filled with water.

1 frozen 3 litre camelback with RS marathon which should last me up to CP 3.

From the start I plan on carrying 6 Biogen gels and 4 Racefood bars to last me to CP 3.

At CP 3 I want to ditch the camelback and go on 2 bottles per stage - one with RS marathon and one with water. I will fill up as needed at the waterpoints.

I will try and get some pasta down at CP 3, but that will be a battle.

Just a note: I always make the mix a little weaker than recommended as the sweetness starts getting too much after a while.

Ludi, wat ookal jy Saterdag gebruik het sal werk, herhaal net X2...

Currently I'm just on Rehydrate Sias, used Epic pro but were told that it is great for stage events, the gents from training4endurance told me that Epic has quite a lot of protein and that slow down absorption from the gut, they suggested seeing that the race is an ultra marathon I must rather look at something like Carbo Fuel from Cadence, now I've seen it and also your Cyto-pro but will still have to test them.

Tell me is the Cyto easy to mix?

Studies that I have read indicates that some protein with carbs does not decrease absorbtion/gastric emptying. One or two have indicated improved performance (time trial times/time to exhaustion/etc), but it was suggeted that its related to the overall calorie intake which is higher with the combo, because the protein and various carbs are absorbed through dufferent mechanisms, so you can absorb more per unit of time (if that makes sense).

That is why a lot of supplement manufacturers are now moving to combinations of protein and carbs.

The stuff that really slows down the gut tends to be fats and fibre.

For a single day 70km race, absorption from the gut will be an issue as you are on the rivets from the gun and your body does not have time to digest the protein etc... On the Dash we are below anaerobic threshold most of the time and the body has time to absorb everything. I have read somewhere that you need protein on such long events to prevent muscle breakdown.

The RS Pro mixes very easily and tastes reasonable. I have used Epic Pro as well, but I don't like the tingly feeling in my face it gives me.

The tingly feeling is Beta-Alanine, just make sure your drink doesn't contain any of it. It helps with vascularity, but not so nice on a bike

Yes, I googled it and the wisdom found on the Hub also informed me. I had a fright the first time my face started itching!
