Hi fellow hubbers,

As per the forum title, I need advice/guidance on how to set up my Garmin Edge 510 in order to follow a route navigation and be able to see my usual training pages as well.

I'm doing the Kaia Manzi event on Saturday 4 Jun and it seems as if we are suppose to download the routes(in gpx format) to our devices. Not sure if this means that there will be no visual course markings?

In any case, I know how to copy the gpx route to my device and I can see the course, my question is what other device/route settings do I need to switch on/off to be able to view my usual training pages but still get the necessary navigation instructions?

Any feedback would be much appreciated!!

  • GPX Files available for download

This is what my email states.

I don't interptret that as GPS only route. I am sure there will be route markings.

Navworld are one of the sponsors so they should be there at the event so you could get help before the start.

Youtube is your friend with this - just seach there and it's fairly easy - just a word of warning - practice before the race and play with the settings until you are comfortable using them.

Thanks for the feedback guys,

I did try and start the course at home last night to see what the navigation looks like but nothing seemed to be different from a normal ride. I guess this is due to the fact that I was not at the actual start point of the route?

I'll try and create a course tonight with a start point at home and see if the actual navigation shows.

Just grab an existing ride and convert it to a course - easy enough to do

^^^^^^ THIS * 100

navigating is NOT something you want to try learning during a race...

True - otherwise you will be learning flying navigation.... shortly before crash landings.... :)

:D  I have to agree!! I'll play around with it before the race and see how it works...

GPX files are only for Garmin units that have proper mapping software, like the 800 and 1000.

The others (500, 510, 520, etc.) can only use TCX files.

If you need help converting a GPX file into TCX, let me know.

Once you've got your TCX file ready, here is how to add the new course to your Garmin:

1. Connect your Garmin via USB cable to your PC.

2. In 'My Computer', open your Garmin drive.

3. Inside you'll find a folder called NewFiles. Copy your TCX course files in there.

4. Turn off your Garmin and disconnect from your PC.

5. Now turn it on again. On the re-boot, your Garmin automatically takes that TCX file and converts it to a format it likes.

6. You will find your new course in the 'Courses' section on your Garmin.

7. Click on the course and it should open up with an 'ant trail' and little direction arrow.

8. When you start riding just follow the ant trail. If you go off course you'll get an "off course" alarm tone and message on the screen.

9. Easy peasy!

Here's what the 'ant trail' looks like on my 520.

Very easy to navigate, even in far-off remote trails in places you've never been before.

That question been answered? I thought that was the crux of the matter ....

In my experience you can have the route on your device and follow it, swipe over to your 'normal' training page showing time, distance or whatever you have chosen. Should a turn (must be an actual turn and not just a slight bend I think) or off course warning come up it will automatically go back to the 'navigation' page ... of praat ek nou bollie?

So I will automatically get navigation feedback even when viewing my training pages after I started a course?

Thanks NotSoBigBen

And thanks tombeej!
