Perhaps there was a split with that crash. . Yoh it was nasty

There was a slight split yes

Enough to drop a lot of contenders

The Cofidis rider apparently clipped his pedal into the barrier

Phew!

After 176km of racing, Alberto Contador (Tinkoff) kept his overall lead, but he lost nine seconds to Sky’s Chris Froome, who finished in the first group.

Hmmm... That makes it 6 secs between the top 3

Odd because it was at 2.5km to go.. so if that is where the split happened they should all have gotten the same time..

A 9 second gap at the end of a sprint stage is a big gap. A couple of hundred metres.

Velonews seems to be saying the split merely formed due to the technical twisty finish, not because of the crash earlier.

Yes, the way I saw it, the crash did not actually split the bunch. They all remained together after the crash.

What a stonking effort from EB. I had him down for the win today!

GO DDD!!!

And yesterday in the final few kms, 'Berto had to grab Kreuziger's bike after he has a broken rear wheel

Fortunately, chased back and managed to preserve his lead

Thx for clearing that up

I'm not convinced by that. The crash didn't split it, that's quite correct, but it caused a little hesitation and a few moments later the split was there. At the speeds they were moving at all it takes is a easing off for a second and gaps will open.

Anyway one thing is for sure. These dam sprints are the most intense things I have seen in any sport. It's insane. I know the mom of one of the guys riding here and she often just cannot watch.

I'm off to hike Fish River tomorrow. Flying in the afternoon to the Northern Cape then driving to Namibia on Sunday. Won't see any more of this race. Will try get connectivity to see what you guys say on this thread.

Enjoy

Hmmmm

Seemingly more controversy and poor application of the rules - from cyclingnews

Contador argued that the time gap should never have been given to his group: "The truth is that losing nine seconds don't bother me," Contador said. "What bothers me more is whether or not the rule of the last three kilometers gets applied. The split on the finishing line was due to a crash."

Posted

Well I think he is correct. It was caused by the crash. As he says 9s not a big deal but we have already seen sme funny stuff. Like why is that mullet Bouhani still n the race.

Agreed, apply the rules - consistently and fairly. ASO have not covered themselves in glory so far.

I couldn't work out how highly experienced world tour pro teams could have stuffed things up like that to just sommer let a gap open for no reason and leave their protected leaders hanging like that. It could only have been because of something like a crash. And the 3km rule is very clear on that.

Initially it didn't look like that crash caused any split, but must have affected the guys behind just enough for a few riders not to be able to get back onto the wheels at that high pace through the twisty stuff that followed immediately after. Once a 10m gap opens like that it can become an unbridgeable canyon.

Remember AC's bike change yesterday - he had a teammate trying to bridge him back onto the charging bunch who couldn't close that last 10m gap and then blew up - it took a desperate slingshot manoeuvre from his buddy to launch AC across the gap and latch on. Looked like it was touch and go for a second there.

----------

And AC is being diplomatic about 9 seconds not being too much. Maybe not in a 3 week grand tour. But in these 1 week stage races, that's how much these races are won/lost by. Every little second counts in these races.

Watch, either AC or Porte are going to miss the final win/podium by a few seconds. And if/when that does happen, a few people are going to be jumping up and down about what happened on stage 4.

There's rules and then there's rules.

IMO the French are desperate enough nowadays to turn a blind eye to any French transgressions in order to try and get ahead.

I watched the crash again.. and Bert was definitely negatively effected by it.

ASO don't like Tinkov that is no secret and it seems they are taking it out on the Tinkoff team... I hope this isn't a sign of things to come during TDF.

And yes the whole damn Cofidos team should have been kicked out. ..

Something very fishy going on there.
