MOUNTAIN BIKING AT A DISCOUNT

With mountain biking being one of the more expensive hobbies, a good off-roader and equipment setting you back R35 000+, why not buy second-hand and save.

Parts, repair kits, apparel, a helmet, gloves, eye protection, tyre levers, spare tubes, a compact pump – the list is endless. Not to mention the upkeep of your bike and needing to possibly replace certain parts as often as monthly.

Shop smart, and Gumtree can help.

Claire Cobbledick, head of Marketing for Gumtree SA, says that “our site showcases an extensive pool of mountain bikes and equipment, ranging from wheels, forks, professional kits and even maintenance shops”.

“If you are able to save money by buying or replacing second-hand or at reduced prices, why not do so”, continues Cobbledick. We’ve found a range of MTB basics needed to keep your dream alive.

The Bike

This 2012 black and green GT Avalanche 3.0 hardtail is equipped with 26 inch wheels, hydraulic brakes and suspension. A 26er weighs less, making it better for rough terrain and perfect for a beginner.

Price on Gumtree: R3 800

Price in retail: R5 000

Helmet

With a mountain bike helmet retailing at over R1 000 brand new, saving R700 seems like a good deal – right? A Bell Mountain Bike helmet, in excellent condition, with a fully adjustable chin strap and a strap at the back is available for only R300 on the site. Keep in mind that mountain biking is a great sport but could get dangerous, so being protected is key.

Maintenance

A UK qualified bike mechanic has made his services available from only R300. Drop your bike off for a standard service, which you can arrange via SMS or WhatsApp. Or better yet, visit the workshop with your bike to get taught some basic bike maintenance skills. For more information see the live ad on Gumtree, here.

Bike Racks

Transporting your bike from home to trail has never been this easy or affordable. These sturdy steel must-haves can hold up to 45kg, mounted to your boot or your tow bar.

MTB can be an expensive pastime but with deals and savings on bikes, along with all the accessories and gear, you’ll be tearing up the single track this winter, thanks to Gumtree – SA’s largest online classifieds site.

Just gotto love the wording of these two statements...

I disagree that "a 26er weighs less" as a broad statement.  I had a super light medium 29er.  I'm talking 10kg hardtail for around R6000.

With a name like Claire Gobbledick, I struggle to take her seriously ..

Then she says ... A 26er weighs less, making it better for rough terrain and perfect for a beginner.

Ja this is gold ..

I knew it all along. Thank you Gumtree for setting the record straight. My 29" will be for sale on Gumtree shortly.

thanks gumtree!

Sorry about that. There ia an Aussie Website www.Dumbtree.com that is just hilarious. Frankly, we (my family) refer to Gumtree with the same Freudian slip.
