I have a 2 door Polo TDi and cant get my bike in the boot unless i take both wheels off(thats a pain).  Does anyone have one of the thule hang on racks that fit on the window? Do they scratch the paint?Cry

Urgent response required as i need to decide before the end of Friday if i should buy one.

Thanks

They don't scratch. Used one with my Fiesta for two years, not a mark.

You should be able to get the bike in the back with only taking off the front wheel. Just take the rear headrests off and the back seats drop right down. I do with my Ibiza Cupra and its essentially the same car. (Cupra is better looking thoughTongue)

Also have one on my pallio and the rack itself hasn't scratched, although you have to be careful with the pedals and things, got a nice rub mark just by the key hole on the boot.

But then again, the roof rack mounts on the pallio are awful. Had one of the racks come off with the mtb on there. Mtb was fine (good solid Scott construction), but the roof has got some lovely dents on it...

yes they scratch.

rather get the roofracks and pro-ride unit.

My opinion: DON'T EVER BUY A ROOF RACK.

Ask Issy Zimmerman why... (and several other people I can give you

references for). You _will_ forget your bike is up there sometime...

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!

I have a Thule that clamps onto a towbar. One minute to take on/off and it

doesn't clamp the bike by the frame (it stands on its wheels). The new Thule

is even better - Andrew McLean showed me his the other day...

I bought a Thule Express 970 or something a few weeks ago.  It pops onto the towbar, like its nobodies business.  Easy as pie!!!  Yes, the bike will scratch the car if you dont fix the pedals and wheels to not whirl around.  But if you tie them donw, then no issue.  Its a greta little rack, light and easy to mount.  Ony bad thing is, with my polo classic, you can't open the boot when its mounted.

Haven't had a problem with the roof rack yet but I always open the sunroof if the bikes are on there just to remind me Wink

I looked at that and thought - "Should I edit it?". "No", says I, "I'll just hope no-one

picks up on it".

Flippin' heck!!!

You can reduce the risk of the rack scratching your car by making sure you wipe down the attachment points on car and rack with a damp cloth before attaching. This removes any dust/dirt that might scratch the paint job.

If you want a roof rack, I'm selling a mate's Thule rack and Proride here:

https://www.bikehub.co.za/forum_posts.asp?TID=25611&KW=

If you buy a new rubber fitting kit it will definitely fit your Polo.

In two years of use, my own rack has never scratched my Polo and I haven't bashed my bike on the garage.

I am. I promise you that with a roof rack on my car, it won't be a case of

"if", but "when"...

I've heard of guys tying bits of ribbon to their rear view mirrors and using other

ways of reminding themselves, but still...
