TrainerRoad... and a ERG based Trainer

Recommended Posts

Edit: so I'm changing this thread's title from "TrainerRoad and Wahoo Kickr' to just TrainerRoad.

Edit: again, ye can't make up mind, "TrainerRoad... and a ERG based Trainer"

Because I think this combination is properly an unfair advantage on training compared to anything else out there.

My personal setup is aTR + Wahoo Kickr + Tickr HR Strap and a RPM Cadence pod, my wife is same except she has a BlueSC (Speed/Cadence sensor), head unit for both is iPad's.

I just thought I'd open this thread for all those that is also on this combination (original thread title).

So lets the conversation started.

How many are using this in combination with TrainingPeaks.

Which programs are you predominantly using, the TR or TP (that you then use to create TR workouts for)

Who's using this setup in combination with a coach?

See if we can get some life into this thread.

Who is simply using this, and who is using it with a PMC, if PMC, did you make your own or download a sheet from some where.

I'e found that for any of coach chad's workouts, I'm only really warm, ready, motor running after the first interval set,

Like this morning, did Grassy Ridge, at the end of the warm up I was ye, ok, but damm whats ahead, and then did the first set of 9 thorny fingers, about mid way through that I was, hmm ok, nah, I can do this, before the first set of intervals I was looking at those intervals and thinking WTF...

G

Previous Training plans was: Sweet Spot Base Low Volume 2 and General Build - Low Volume,

I can't fit more into a week than about 4,5 hours, via 4 workouts, get up at 04:00 for normal hour session and earlier for the longer sessions which ends making it a very long day till 10pm when I get into bed.

I train on a cycleops powesync whether using the CVT workouts or online racing (less structured, hard but fun)

I use this is conjunction with Golden Cheetah for my PMC, has everything that Training Peaks has, plus every statistic and more.

With a Kickr you can also do workouts and integrate straight into GC

I have found with TR that they will easy you into it if you go through base then build then speciality... those plans are built around the idea that you are spending a good 6 months building up to an event. The low volume workouts do seem to be a bit low intensity too, i use the medium or higher volume and just restructure the plan to fit into your day and available time.

Also you can look at rather going into the specialty plans depending on what you are looking for out of your training and your future goals?

Not sure if this will help with the ERG trainers but i did find that the TR power curve used for my cycleops Jetfluid trainer was horribly out from what cycleops VT have.

Did an FTP test on TR using PC and with Cycleops VT running on my tablet at the same time and results were nearly 50 watts different...

Aware of GC, was looking at the and TR in the beginning, decided to go TR.

what PMC are you using, own build, downloaded? willing to share, busy putting a sheet together myself.

Problem with 2 little kiddies int he house, I only have the time in the morning, have to get into shower at latest 05:15, out of the house by 05:30.

So work back from there.

Training at the moment is 4 days a week, Mon-Tues/Wed, Thursday off, then Friday, Saturday off, Sunday ride with the wife, Some Saturday's I'll ride with a group,

Sunday is normally not to difficult so can maybe be termed borderline recovery ride, depending how many blue sections I throw in.

I have been using TR with a Kickr, and a power meter on the bike, for just over the last two months.
I started with Sweet Spot Base II Mid Volume, as the workouts days & length were what I was used to.
I have made use of two of the JHB based training studios, over the last three years. Stopped in November last year as I felt stagnant, and there appeared to be no real periodization.
My first FTP test gave me a number FTP lower than my Argus peak, but I expected that as I had some time off without structure and a small heart op.
FTP up by almost 5% after base phase, which was seven weeks. I am now about 5% below my Argus peak, and am two weeks into their General Build Mid Volume.

Erg mode is a killer.  There is no backing out, as you fade and your cadence starts to drop, the power remains the same, so HTFU and pedal faster.

I have really enjoyed the structure, have no self motivation issues, so am looking forward to the rest of the training plan.

I am up at 4:15 three days a week, and then do the Sat & Sun workouts when I wake up.

I have avoided group rides during the base phase, to get the best out of the short amount of time I had.

I will be doing the CL group rides every two weeks going forward, to keep skills in place.

I use GC for PMC.

GC software calculates your PMC and produces the charts, whether coggan or skiba.  I have 2 PMC charts under trends, 1 for cycling (coggan) and 1 for triathlons (TriScore).  At the beginning of the year I set up my data ranges into 3 x 4 months and input all the events/races am likely to do that year (cycling, running or tri's), so can monitor my fitness and fatigue in the run up to those events and also compare to a previous event with regard to performance.

After every training session, I import my garmin fit file to GC, review my pace zones, HR zones and if needs be make notes with regard to how was feeling/performed at the event/race.  Currently in base maintaining fitness through winter and will start building for EL and PE Ironman next year.

I use GT for PMC ???

Ye the ERG mode makes it simpler, you just pedal and keep the cadence and the trainer does the rest, I actually think I find it easier compared to say Slope mode which I think more represent other trainers.

sounds like we roll out the bed about the same time, I'm on the trainer at 04:10.

GT was supposed to be GC, edited and corrected.

I find that my legs are taking more strain than with all my previous training I have done in the past.

I cant wait for the racing season to start.

I use Golden Cheetah primarily for the PMC (using my PowerCal so don't need any ABSOLUTE numbers) and it works great - keep in mind you do need a few months data before it becomes really useful .......

hehehe

need them to start publicly responding, they have multiple questions form me every week,

Sure the support guy have daily chats in the form of "So what did G ask today"

BTW, I have two one month TR trials.

PM me your full name and email, and the first two get them.

Make sure you have a trainer, as the benefit of the program is based on in door training.
