Which vitamins and minerals?

My common sense tells me that even the most “balanced” of diets will still be short of all the needs of an active athlete.

But even with contents listed in detail on the packet, if you were dof like me, how do you compare these brands?

One can imagine that there are only a few really important vitamins and minerals that are likely to be in short supply in a “balanced diet”. So if we could get those ones quantified, that should enable us to compare brands and prices on “apples for apples” basis.

I am sure there are (as usual) many wise opinions, but if there are knowledgeable members on this topic out there, I am keen to hear them out.

Thanx!

In conjunction with your mommy telling you to "EET AL JOU GROENTE MY KIND!!",...These are found as the only to be suplemented:

Zinc and Magnesium, but then I have specific reasons for those.

Nothing else but fruit and vegetables (cover as many colours as possible)

If you read your recovery supplements correctly they have all of the vitamins you need. IMO if you are actually pushing hard you should be on some form of a protein shake for recovery or like the usn recovery pro stuff, and they have the vitamins in there already making other vitamins un neccessary. But again, my personal opinion and what works for me...

I used to use MinAmino when training a lot, but it seems like they have taken it off of the market.

This had all the minerals and amino acids needed in it.

How important is Iron in your diet and how does a shortage of it affect performance on the bike?

VERY important to have enough - too much is a big problem...

Indirectly - if you have no iron, then your blood has low haemoglobin levels (this carries oxygen), then you have low oxygen carrying capacity, and your perfomance is degraded.

If you want to experiment with this - just donate blood 2 days before a race....

All I can add is the Vitamin / supplement industry is a very profitable one,Once read some ridiculous figures they were pumping out..So they will try anything to convince you to buy into it... As Brandon's Mom said..EET JOU GROENTE!
