Howzit all, pretty new to the hub and thought I would intro myself properly.

I am a total noob to mtb, my wife, son and I have riden offroad dirtbikes for about 3 years or so and thought it would be nice to see what all the mtb craze is.

We were at pwc the past weekend (yes I am sure some of you already know me from my 2c on the rant thread) and my son and wife loved it. Me on the other hand struggled due to being....well a bit of a fat bugger [emoji3], we would like to explore the mtb world a bit more starting with some starter bikes. My son has a bike, nothing fancy but fine for now so it's myself and my wife looking for some wheels. Until we decide if this is the sport for us I am not wanting to drop any large amounts of money. We went to Cajee in centurion over the weekend and they recommended a titan sport 29er on xl frame for me and a 27er medium Frame calypso for my wife. They are Ali framed and have disk breaks (not hydrolic) and standard spring forks. Could pick both up for about R14k. Now I am sure they are not fantastic bikes but I would be interested in some opinions and or guidance from the forum on this. I am 6foot4 and 140kg and my wife 5foot6 and ??? Kg[emoji16].

Anyways hope to meet some of you on the trails at some point.

Cheers for now

Welcome . Firstly don't buy from cajees, they are rubbish. The bikes are fair but very entry level. If you enjoy it which you will, you might be spending more money very soon. Many people here will help with info, good luck .

The only time you ever go into Cajees is if you know exactly what you want and try to haggle the best price...thats it....not for services or advice as that is suicide.

A good start would be to browse the classifieds here as you will get better bang for your buck.

Just remember you need money for shoes, shorts gloves, helmet (take that spell check police...lol)....etc

Welcome to the hub. I get what you trying to do with the price thing but that might scare you off the sport! Almost did for me. Anyway if I may ask do you have a set budget? Titan bikes will get you some way the components might let you down a bit. In my humble opinion though I'd say go for it. Especially if you are able to satisfy your need/desire for an upgrade at some point in time and if it gets you out there on the bike! You going to love it.

Welcome!

The size bikes Cajees recommended look about right given your heights.

Nothing wrong with Titan as a starter - but that's exactly what they are.  If the bug bites, you will be upgrading in 6 months.

Perhaps try the classifieds.  More bang for your buck and also probably a lot less depreciation on your purchase if you decide to upgrade (or if the bug doesn't bite - unlikely).

Don't be scared to ask questions here.  The Hubbers might take the p1ss out of you -  but all in jest.  Ultimately you will get a decent answer.

Most of all, enjoy the ride.

As mentioned, look for some cheap entry level bikes 2nd hand. You'll get much more for your money and there's usually a somewhat decent supply of bikes to go round as people get into the sport and do the inevitable upgrade. But you need to follow the route you are planning so that you have personal experience at why the upgraded options have the value they do!

Oh and your dirtbike will love you spending time on the pedal bike as you will unfortunately lose some kilos!

Welcome to this crazy community!

Hi, welcome! Few things....

-As mentioned, beware of Cajees.

-Sell your MTB and get a road bike, roadies rule and we have shaved legs which makes us awesome.

-Well done on your opinion of the PWC thread, liked that.

-Keep it real and Hubbers will go out other their way to help you with almost any advice you might need on this new journey of yours.

-Most importantly, don't take this place too seriously, especially on a Friday.

Most important thing about starting off is get the right size bike. Go to a few shops and see what they recommend. then look for those sizes in the classifieds, as everyone has said, you'll get more bang for your buck - welcome to the Dark Side BTW  :nuke:

Welcome....you gonna love the ride.

Cajees = stay away and please dont take their advice.

Ask around here and rather buy second hand then develop a good relationship with your LBS.

The bug will bite!

Take your budget that you are willing to spend at cajess and browse through the classifieds here and see what you can get for the same money .

Buying from the classifieds has major benefits. If you buy wisely and ask hub land for advice.

1st wayyyyyy better value and a better bike ,which can make for more of an enjoyable experience and more reliable ride.

2ndly if the bug does bite you won't take a big loss on the resale when you upgrade, which is absolutely a dead cert ! And if it doesn't bite same applies when you sell.

3rdly And probably most importantly you won't be supporting cajees ???? Thus making sure you buy the right size and not just what they have in stock or can't sell.

Enjoy the ride and family time it's awesome and way to addictive .

Dont forget 26ers on the classifieds, maybe not for you as you are quite tall but it should be fine for your wife.  There are some very good bargains here.
