Cyclesure are good, quoting R585.00 for 90K, it's from Santam that i got R931.00 for the same amount.

if t was me, I would go for the cycling specific cover. Thats what I would choose personally, I am by no means giving advice.

Real numbers:

Age: 32

R120k mtb: R382pm normal excess R10k

R45k road: R155pm normal excess R3k

However, both my excesses are R0 because I've had the bikes valued and the documentation logged with the insurer (Discovery). This is genuine all-risks cover.

Please advise who you contacted to get this done? I'm happy with Discovery but not their R5k excess!

Outsurance: R67K Transition MTB... quoted R908 PM and I have household and car with them. Nice. Better believe they are getting a bullet in 2017.

Who has signed with and/or claimed before from cyclesure or from hollard?

My broker feels that the lowest rate he can get me is at around 10%, and this is on an existing policy incl a bunch of all risk items.

you can get it at around 4 to 6% just ask, i did and got 4%. 10% is the norm.

What is that 10% etc referring to? How the insurer loads the monthly premium according to the value?

Get your stuff valued and upload it to the vault. It will happen automatically. Though I do recommend contacting Discovery first and getting them to tell you which bikeshop should do this for you. I had a proper run-around getting that done; they rejected a replacement invoice for not being a proper valuation, so I had to take it to Bruce Reyneke and get a letter from them.

It's also important to note that the excess waiver only applies in the event of a complete loss. Normal excess applies for a partial loss. I had to get in touch with the claims department to verify this piece of info, as I had multiple contradictory responses over this. I've since switched insurers entirely; R600 for R185k combined cover and R1k excess per item, so this will cover all my gear as well in the event of a crash or something.

Could you perhaps explain more in depth what it is?

10% of what etc?

Average for a bicycle should be between 4% and 5% IF you have a decent claims history.

What that % means is annual premium based on value of the bike.

So if you have a R100k bike your annual premium should be between R4k and R5k, or R330 to R420 per month.

This is however just guidelines. If your premium is very different to that, there might be very valid reasons for it. Just ask.

Last I heard Discovery don't grant cover for damage to bicycles while participating in timed events. With bicycles being high risk it is my suggestion that one keep this cover separate from household cover to avoid general premium increases in the event of multiple or large losses.

Thank you very much, good to know some ins/outs of how insurance is geared.

They didn't care that my bike was smashed at the great Argus. Neither did they ask when I did a scorpion on the road.

Hi Guys, what are the norm when your claim was successful. Do the insurance pay the money to your Lbs or into your account?

Most of the times to the LBS and on very rare occasions they will pay you out directly.
