understanding my disk brakes

Hi Hubbers,

Been on my first ever Mtb for about a week now. Im riding a specialized stuntjumper ht running magura mts brakes.

I have been noticing uneven jerking in my braking and wondering what it might be. The brakes and pads are basically brand new. I even took tthe pads out of the caliper to look and it all looks ok.

Any explanation for this? How to resolve and any long term wear and tear effects on the actual disk rotors?

Thanks

Not sure which model year you have but the 2013 stumpjumper ht and epics came with those brakes. They were terrible and my research said the pads were the problem as the pads used were different compared to the retail version of the brakes.

The Magura pads were so expensive and difficult to find that I just changed to Shimano brakes instead.

Its a 2015 stuntjumper.

Basically what im experiencing is as i break and hold down on the brakes its as if thereciif the surface isnt smooth and at cwrtain points of the wheels cycle it jerks whilst braking and other its smooth.

Hope that explanation helps

Brakes need to bed in. If they are new, just give them a chance. If you experience the same in a few weeks take it back to the shop you bought it from. It should still be under warranty

As i say this bike is basically brand new. No reason they should be warped

Pointless assuming something is ok during fault-finding. It's simple enough to verify if you haven't already. Also have a look at the surface of the rotor.

Also, have you confirmed that both the caliper and the rotor are properly secured, that is, not loose?

I'd suggest taking it to your LBS to get it checked out, especially if you're not familiar with the workings of the brakes.

From the posts above you can see it could be a number of issues and your LBS should be able to sort it out for you. No point worrying about a key safety element of the bike on the next ride.

I had a similar issue with my stumpjumper, whereby the brakes shudder when braking and made a hell of a noise.

After cleaning both brake pads and rotors, lightly sanded the pads etc... the issue remained. My very helpful LBS suggested a softer compound brake pad as it seems that the original brake pads were to hard.

Fitted the softer ones... problem solved!

Now I enjoy smooth and quiet braking  :)
