Shock repair

My rock shock sid got damaged mysteriously after about two years of not riding. A seal at the top of the tube came out after haning the bike for the two years after the first 100m of tar road. I took it on for a service and the shop ( rather not mention a name as Im not sure of the facts) told me rhe repair would cost R5000 rand as the inner tube of the shock had wear and tear. I think the person working on it damaged it as per the photo they srnt it doesnt look like someting that would happen from wear and tear. My question. Please help with a number for a repair shop that works with shock repairs that wont rip me off!

Theres is no photo. Which region are you from? David Marshal form spoke and spanner for Gauteng and hubber Droo from CT has a great reputation here.

Torq zone cycles , but its far from you ...they can evaluate what is wrong and repair it and then you can maybe put a claim in at the shop so they have to pay for the damages

20 questions time:

How old is the fork?

Has it ever been serviced before?

How do you clean your bike?

What does the damage look like? I'm going to need photos here.

Then - on a SID, if there's wear on the stanchion, which is what I'm suspecting here, you can't just replace the stanchions - you have to replace the lowers as well. So you're in for closer to R 9k than 5k.

It's almost impossible to damage stanchions while servicing a fork unless you're really trying.

" unless you're really trying." - With a grinder, as your primary tool.

In my experience a rock can do the job pretty well too.

Im about 100Kms from Gauteng so a repair store in jhb or Pta would suit me fine. Otehrwise Im willing to send it way if needed.

its a Rockshock sid 2012

I did service the it in may 2014 before the sani 2 C at Cycle lab. It worked like a charm.

later the year I did the Wines to Whales in november. the shock still worked greatly and only the rest of the bike was serviced as it was not necessary as per the discussion with same store where it is now.

After the november that year (2014) I might have done 200-300Kms since then.

That looks like it has split along the groove that holds the internal circlip in place.  Terminal in my opinion.  Can't speculate on where the fault lies.

The issue of the wiper seal popping off after long storage is not uncommon.  The air piston seals (o-rings on RS) flatten out when not used and can let the air through.  I have had it happen on an unridden new old stock fork.

Ouch.

That's a manufacturing defect, not something the shop's done. Unfortunately it's well out of warranty, so you've got no recourse to the manufacturer there.

You may get away with just new stanchions, depending on the condition of the bushings - hopefully the sharp edges didn't damage the lining on the way out.

If that's the spring side, which I suspect it is, then it's also the cause of the wiper popping out....

What Dave and Droo said...unfortunately because its out of it 1 or 2 year warranty period (no matter the actual mileage on it) the repair is for your account...

I understand the popping of the seal due to it standing.

do you maybee have a number for a place that would be able to give me quote on repair?
