He may end up disappointed. The action and position of cycling is what strains the lower back, and a soft tail bike will only ease this marginally. It's definitely more comfortable, but it won't help with lower back strain.

I speak from experience here - slipped the L5 disc 2 months back as a result of a weakened lower back from way too much 'bike only' training. I've learnt a heck of a lot about lower back muscles in the past 60 days...

This is why I would recommend the Fuel EX over the Top Fuel, or the Scott Genius over the Spark, or a Trance over an Anthem...

More trail orientated bikes have stable handling, more upright riding positioning and longer suspension travel which will all suit an elderly gent.

The Vipa is no doubt a great bike, same as the spark etc, but these are aimed at the "wanna go fast in a marathon crowd" rather than someone looking for a comfortable un-strained ride.

Very good point. Geometry plays a significant part of bike set up.

Hi ill go have a look at the spez, domt know anyone that rides spez and hear alot of people hating on the brand and saying its overpriced. But i geuss if its the most popular bike at the cape epic then it should be good.

My 2016 Camber Comp was R34k. Anthem/Trance R35k

Don't believe the haters.  There's a reason they are haters!

O wow have you fully recovered? Im not shore if its strain or just the bumps he receives that is getting to much for him.

Hi thanks for correcting me, i was referring to the spark, we were looking at the 2016 model. Do you have aney experience with this bike?

I don't have any personal experience with it no. But I have friends who are very positive about it.

I do however have a 2016 Giant Trance 2, and I love it. Personally have back issues (herniated discs, been struggling with it for 3 years now) and it is a very comfortable and fun bike.

I recently bough a new bike so the Trance is for sale, but it is a medium so won't help your friend much.

In that price range, also consider a good second hand PYGA oneten. Won't go wrong, if you can find one.

O yah i didnt even think of Pyga will most definitely also consider. Thanks

Just something to consider, especially coz your mate has back problems. The correct fit of bike is going to be mch more important than anything else in aleviating pain. Try go for the longest possible top tube. This may seem counter intuitive, but ever since I went from a Medium to a Large frame my back has been much better.

So whatever bike you do decide on, just try get a propper fit done before you commit to make sure it can be fitted to his riding style. A large in one make is not necessarily the same as a large in another make.

Your driend should also see a bio and get a proper excercise plan to assist with the strengthening of his core. Makes a world of difference as far as comfort is concerned. Otherthan that a more trail orientated bike is definitely gonna be more comfortable.
