So I bought this bike...Unhappiest day of my life.

Thought I'd share my story.

I'm past being angry, not disappointed or sad anymore...maybe just content that I have to make do with what I have now, because I know that for the money I'm not going to get anything better. Please note that I am not posting this to shame anyone, so I won't be posting any names. I just felt that I needed to write the whole debacle down....

I sold my beloved KTM mtb as I wanted something with a smaller/racier frame. Got hooked up with a shop in the WC and they were very helpful and sent me some pics of a racing machine (see below, picture that was sent to me). The owner of the shop did tell me about a scratch on the top tube, but I knew that I was buying second hand and expected the odd wear and tear. The R15 000 I paid them got me a Cube Reaction GTC SL 29er, X0 groupset/crank, XX brakes and some DT Swiss wheels.

Bike was sent through and when I peaked into the box, loading it into my car, something looked "off". Took the box straight to my local bike shop and the 3 of us started unpacking and fitting parts. Man was I disappointed. The amount of wear on the rims and spokes was short of horrific. The pictures I was sent hid the wear on the frame very well and the tyres had so much superglue on them I could smell it.....then the S*#$T hit the fan.

  • Both Brake discs where bent.
  • We couldnt fit the front wheel because the hub didn't fit in the fork. We later saw that the incorrect bearings and adapters were used, also the adaptor caps were broken and we had to McGyver it in there just so that it didnt fall apart.
  • The brakes were so shot that even after we bled the brakes and replaced the pads the lever pushes into the front of my Fingers when I need to stop.
  • The headstock bearing was broken.
  • The frontwheel had a slow puncture and I almost got moered by my wife because of the sealant on her carpet.
  • Totaling all the repairs was R1500 which the store owner was kind enough to reimburse me.
  • The front wheel brake disk is still not lining up in the brake calipers, because of the incorrect hub parts so 9 days after I have paid for the bike it's still standing. I was told they will send an adapter kit, but it looks like I will have to phone again and ask nicely when.
  • I was offered replacement wheels, but a smack in the face would have been a better offer - embarrassing to say the least.

Now I can continue with some other things but I'm tired of typing with one finger. The problem I have is that I have to keep contacting them about issues. Not one call asking me if I was happy or whatever...I mos already paid them.

To his credit the owner has been very sincere and sounds like a chap you can have a braai with, but his sincerity has not landed my bum on the bike he sold me yet.

I like the bike, it's second hand so I knew from the start that I would eventually have to replace a few things like the brakes/disks/chainrings/bearings and even the wheels...I just hoped I didnt have to do it before I've even ridden the bike.

Would I sell a bike like this to anyone....never. Shocking service from a respected bike shop.

Why dont you want to name and shame?
That bike is in a *** condition and if this wasnt conveyed to you then you have been burned badly.

I understand your point 100% , But still think if you could get the hub adapters

gooi A NAAS headset on the bike

Have the wheels rebuilt with new spokes and nipples

And then Maybe replace the brakes al together you will end up with one "MOERSE" nice bike.   ( even with the exstra costs , you won't find a bike like that in the price range)

Sorry for the troubles you have had to face before even riding it . :)

what would have this bike costed you if you bought it new ??

Honestly it's difficult to say as there's so many parts from different manufacturers on it it's not even funny....again I say, it's not a bad bike. Something that will help me work my name bac on some segment lists....when fixed.

if the shop agreed to pay for what needs to be done, then just get it sorted and move on. Push them if you have to, its your money.
