MTB tyre for road race

Hey

Been through numerous tyre posts on here and just wanted to ask. See the entries for stellenbosch cycle tour are out I may enter. Thing is I have no road bike yet so want to ride it on my mtb (giant trance 2 2016. Are there any XC tyres that I can ride XC races with and road training and rides until I get a road bike or should I just use 650B slicks? Running ibex canis excellent for mtb riding and XC but not sure about road so much, must be a better option.

Thanks

I just rode the Amashova with Schwalbe Thunder Burt Evo MTB Tyres and I found them to be quite smooth on the tar. I ran them tubeless and it was awesome when we hit a patch of broken glass, my front tyre sealed whilst my two mates ended up fixing punctures. I don't like the look of a MTB with road tyres it just seems wrong.

Thanks Tony will take a look at those. I too have them sitting in the garage but find the bike looks really strange with them on and don't think I need to go to that much trouble just a mtb tyre will do ????????

Slicks are really the only way to go if you are going to do a lot of road riding. Anything else has a lot of road and air resistance.

Thanks for the reply, besides the strange looks have not tried them on my bike before. I would like to set something up tubeless as I have put on rim tape and done tubeless with my current tyres. Reasoning being I can ride XC/Good Road tyres on trails and a bit of road training and then proper MTB trails with my Onza/Canis eventually MagicMary/Rock Razor setup. Wont be doing too much road riding just maybe a 50/60km a week and the odd road race.

I have run Serfas Drifter with amazing results on tar very good grip and you can run it at 65psi giving almost no rolling resistance

Doesn't using MTB tyres on the road cause premature wear? I mean not for a once off race but for training ....

Started commuting on my mtb, and the tar ate my tyres. They were done within 1000kms. So I got an old bike to commute with, with cheapskate slicks on, pumped to near bursting point, and they are past 1000km, showing almost no wear.

Once-off it's no biggie, just pump them hard. Training road only is a no-no.

Yea it does eat away at them. Do lots of my training rides for XC stuff off road and on tracks only do say 50km a week on road maybe and that has resulted in my canis rear tyre to be just about done after 1000 or so km.

Pick where you want to ride - road or off-road - no great tyre for both.

Conti RaceKings may be good on the tar...  but if you put one on the front then enjoy the slide and crash...

get a second set of rims and fit mtb slicks for the road. then fit your normal for the offroad.

Or get a road bike. :D
