Like I said before this was my 4th IM and yet again i started feeling nauseous in the final few Kms of the bike and then finally starting vomiting during the run which resulted in me almost walking most of the marathon. I still manage to finish with plenty of time but I was really run fit so it was a big disappointment!

I am currently reading a few articles on the issue but I just want to gather as much info and advice as possible to sort this nausea/vomiting during prolonged endurance events!.

How many of you suffer of similar symptoms and how did/do you sort this out?

A few notes:

  • I do have have a sensitive stomach/digestive system.
  • i used High 5 source, water and some solid food during the race.

Any advice or info would be appreciated.

I had the exact same problem, started vomiting on the second run lap couldn't keep any fluids down. My run turned into a walk and my 12h30 finish turned into a 15h04.

I think I overdid the nutrition -  took in too much. But I'll be back next year, already entered.

"So what is “stomach shutdown” and what causes it? Assuming the cause is not medical—such as irritable bowel syndrome or vagus nerve damage—the cause more than likely is related to a mismatch between effort and fuel volume or the variability of intensity throughout the early portion of the bike or run."

interesting article. I'm always nervous of the 'only drink when you're thirsty' rule. I worry it'll be too late, and if you're dehydrated, I'm as good as dead

So I was sick about 20km's into the run. This is the first time its happened. I usually battle a sensitiive stomach during any old run, but its never resulted in nausea - it only threatens the other end... Knowing this I took a few Immodiums with me on the run, of which I took one of anyway when I started feeling ill. I don't know whether that helped me at all, but I also drank very little water for the next 15km's, I did drink a bit of coke which ususally seems to settle my stomach somehow. But no more food nor gels during the entire run. The nasuea went away after 30/45 mins.

I ate 4 bars (jungle and USN oats), and 4 powerbar gels, and got through probably 4 bottles of 32GI drink. This is exactly the same as the 3 long rides I did in training, but I was so scared/intimidated by the whole event and the upcoming run, I backed way off the bike intensity. So maybe as Dav/d's article suggests my stomach gave up on me while it was drowning in sugars.

Let me try and repay the guidance, experiences and encouragement you guys gave me in the build-up to the race - attached is my first Ironman race experience.

sorry it is very long winded, but I wanted to do it for myself as well, something to reflect on later in life maybe - a brief synopsis:

Good swim, average bike, fair run - total time 13:29.44 - FLIPPEN AWESOME DAY!!!
