My 5 cents

I ALWAYS say - I will take it. Clear and concise. And immediately follow up with a PM (isn't this what the service is for?)

HOWEVER. Twice this year I have committed to a purchase within minutes of the ad placement (5K plus items). Item 1, after numerous messages on PM and whatsap plus two voice messages as the phone was not being answered, I was eventually told the item was sold .

Item 2. A guy in Cape Town committed to the sale. I arranged transport. When he did not respond to bank details requests, he answered my second phone call to tell me some bloke had just collected the bike and paid cash which was convenient for him. Well why did you commit to my sale if not convenient??? Dammit.

It is clear to me that there are two types of traders. Old school like many of us who operate on a nod and a word of honour and commitment. And others (the de-dibbers) .

I have just sold a bike and 3 other items. Bike went to White River, crankset to Paarl, wheelset to Grahamstown and shoes to Parys. Jeez, I felt like Santa's elf last night, all the packing. So what. Commit to the sale, do the work and help and respect your fellow biker.

I feel so much better, I will now get off my soap box.

Lastly. Thank you to all the fabulous (non-dibbing) hubbers out there. You all make it worth the while.

really, dont have the money ? Is that the only reason you can think of? Money ? What about someone needing to make sure it is the right size? Or they see something well priced but need to confirm damages? This is not gumtree, it is the Hub.  Or do you fall into the category that will take the money and say to the buyer sorry for you if it is to big or small, you should have checked first ? I do see your point, but then you leave no room for communication.

Besides this, there are several things that come into play. But mostly it is about communication. If I as a buyer ask for first option, you as the seller either need to say to me, sorry no, this is first come first serve. Or as I have mostly experienced, the seller will say sure no worries you have first option till tomorrow. Most times its along the lines of, sorry you are number 50 in the que, when your comes up I will let you know.

BIG EDIT: KingTJ, I see on your profile you have never sold anything on the Bikehub. Meaning all your dealings are on other sites. In which case dibs means nothing. Cash is king. But that is not how things roll on this forum.

I think you need to go read the opening post again before replying...my reply was specifically in context to that post. After +-15000 post you should know that...but i guess thats the hubs way.

.

I wish I was in your position and had the commitment in writing: SMS, PM, etc just to ease proof.

I am waiting for this to happen to me as I am looking forward to suing the seller with a demand that he deliver what he had contracted to.

I always understood DIBS to be for something that was not yet for sale, and should it become available sometime in the future, you would have first option, if you had called DIBS. This would normally be an agreement precluded amongst mates, and excluded items such as ex girlfriends, sisters and or any item whose sentimentality to the group would cause undue friction amongst the Bro's and was therefore out of bounds. If the item that you had called DIBS on was no longer of interest to you, when it became available for sale, then it would be offered to anyone else who was interested. Normal selling / trading rules would apply.

It has no place anywhere else.

I don't agree, but whatever.

When I was a kid my siblings and I used dibs all the time:

dibs the front seat (of the car).

dibs the crust (of the loaf of bread).

dibs the blue smartie.

dibs showering first.

so to my mind it means first option on whatever and has every place on the hub

pretty much the opposite of ningy (have no idea how to spell it).

ningy answering the phone.

ningy washing the dishes (unlikely, as we were lucky enough to have a house servant).

ningy cleaning up.

ningy carrying the shopping.

obviously, you don't want an option!

Really, you are looking forward to someone treating you badly. Do you not have better things to look forward to?
