Puking when training - far too often/Training while using Venlor (anti-depressant)

I know I need to see a doctor, but just wanted to get some feedback from fellow hubbers first (to possibly inform my discussion with the doc).

I'm 42. After being a provincial triathlete and swimmer when I was at school (a very long time ago) and then becoming a couch potato at 18 until I was 32, I started road cycling in 2007. I was pretty consistent in my training until early this year (April) - 10 x 100km road races a year, 2h45 94.7, averaging 7 hours per week minimum on the bike and 12 to 14 hours a week when peaking, throughout the year (with a one month break in winter).

Started MTB in December, but my roadie need for speed (and lack of MTB skills) resulted in me hitting a pretty innocuous bump in a park, doing a bolmakiesie over the handlebars, and virtually destroying my shoulder in April (broken collarbone, broken coracoid process, torn ACL, cracked scapula - my injuries are the subject of medical journal articles and even lectures to orthopedic surgeons at conferences).

Put about 10kg on between April and August (a result of lack of exercise and being on Venlor - a hectic anti depressant needed because of personal issues, exacerbated by lack of exercise). Started spinning in August, power training in late September, and went for my first ride on Sunday last week (23 Oct) after finally being given the all clear by the orthopod. Still 20kg over racing weight (I'm 88kg now, and 1.75m tall), but getting fitter.

Happy to be back. However, my first power training session in early October resulted in me throwing up. I threw up on Sunday when cycling (60k ride, nothing too hectic), and was throwing up at my power session on Tuesday this week (25 Oct). I also feel nauseous every time I train at above 75% of my max hr for an hour (which is the usual Mark Carroll/Cadence power session). Have reduced the dose of the Venlor in October (which I have been taking since December 2014), but need to continue it until the source of the personal problems (my divorce) is over.

Has anyone else had this experience after a long time off the bike and/or after putting on huge weight? Could this be the Venlor (the anti-depressant I'm using)? Has anyone else had any experience with Venlor and exercise (there isn't much on the web about this)? Or is this simply because I'm getting old, am fat, have lost my ability to burn fat as a source of fuel while exercising, and am unfit?

Any comments? Again, I know I need to have a chat with the doc tomorrow.

Definitely not from getting old and fat (had to laugh at that comment).

I'm no doctor but you aren't old or fat...so gotta be another cause.

No gastric issues when not training. Completely and totally healthy otherwise. Trying to get the ketastasis going, so training on an empty stomach at the moment.

Hi Grogs - My only thought is you're doing too much all at once, especially if you've been off the bike a while.

I'm not a doctor, but I have spent a lot of my life training, and sometimes training quite hard. Why not experiment with the following

a few weeks doing long rides at 65% max HR - build some endurance and a good base for that power training. This may help get you back into the swing of things. this is heart/lung training - it's not resting.

eat a little before you ride (again just to get going - then start the diet thing if you really want to). empty stomach can make me nauseous, and especially if you're not recently accustomed to cycling

take a break from the power training until you have a base going. again 2 or 3 weeks off..

That may be completely unhelpful. just my 2c worth

Being a provisional athlete in the past I am sure you would have had some serious sessions in the past, Any similar issues experienced then?

Do you smoke?

I think that everyone who goes really hard in training experiences nausea (and possibly vomits) in really hard sessions. When I was swimming competitively, the coach actually used to keep a bucket at every lane when we did sprint training sessions on Saturdays. Only used the bucket a few times in about 5 years (and went harder in those sessions than I've ever gone on a bike or in a power session).

Was a competitive smoker in my 20s, then a social smoker in my early 30s, then a non-smoker at 32. I don't smoke now.

Are you following a specific diet? For weight loss? Like Banting? Taking any supplements? Regardless you should still go see a doc.

Haven't changed anything - same food, same supplements. Same routine. Just extra weight and the drugs (Venlor).

If those are the only two things that have changed, then those are the things you need to change back....

I was on anti depressants for a while for similar reasons (a long time ago and not venlor).

When I started to reduce the dose I had various symptoms including dizzyness and a sort of double vision effect. Doc explained that the body becomes used to these things and it takes a while to wean yourself off them. I had withdrawal symptoms for 6 months ....gradually faded. It was necessary for me to reduce the dose very gradually and eventually switch to a different drug for a few weeks before stopping altogether. Fortunately have not needed them ever again.

So it could be related to the recently reduced dosage but definitely see the doc and get all the vitals checked as well. Hang in there....

Silly question, but have you read the pamphlet that came with the drugs?  Check the side effects / contra-indications.

Also, please discuss your exercise habits with the Doc - riding 7 hours per week is considered EXTREME by most medical professionals and members of the public.  Remember, our normal is not normal at all.

I was taken off meds by my Specialist when he figured out how much exercise i was doing at high HR..."cos, you know, those meds are known to cause heart attacks...".  I kid you not.

Good luck!
