Trials in SA (Gauteng etc.) - Where is everyone?

Hi guys,

I did an intro way back, lost my username and password since then.

So I'm keen to get back into it - Looking at importing a bike but thought I'd see how many guys actively ride in Gauteng (I'm based in Sandton, JHB) before I go and spend the money.

I PM'd some members last night whom I thought might still be riding here, but thought it would be interesting to see whether I can get some participation on this thread.

Riding alone just isn't fun and in 2016 we really shouldn't battle getting in touch with people to ride with. I'd like to get a list of everyone that rides together and have message groups (Whatsapp or the like) for Gauteng (JHB, Pret etc)) / CT etc together so rides can be planned, get some involvement and also for people that want to get into it but don't know anyone.

So if you guysknow of someone or you ride yourself - Chime in and share your details.

My background - I started riding as a teenager in Bloemfontein and I think we were part of the very initial phases of Trials in SA back then. I rode with guys like Braam Du Plessis, Pieter Hayley, LJ Kilian, Dylan Victor, Andrew Guess etc. Some of you might even recognise some of the names. Well I moved out of town after that period and in Port Elizabeth the scene was non existant and so I stopped riding.

But now I'm in good'ol Gauteng and there must be tons of guys riding in JHB (I know there are in CT) so lets get some names and numbers together. Everyone can benefit from this and I'd like to hook up with some guys here in Gauteng.

I'll start:

GAUTENG

Werner (26") - oh83 22seven 6043 - Johannesburg/Sandton

WESTERN CAPE

EASTERN CAPE

PS - I'll be in the Cape Town area and I'd be keen to join some guys over December. While updating the list, you might want to share something about your history with the sport, what you ride and how often your ride etc.

Can we join the whatsapp groups just for the *** praat? :whistling:

I am in the Edenglen area and we already have a few whatsapp groups and riding groups that go out at 04h00, 04h15 and 04h30.

99% of the chats have nothing to do with riding and then at the last minute we plan a ride and say who is in and off we go.

Hi LWB

So I'd like if we can get a list together for poeple like me that don't even know if we people are still riding, let alone in our areas.

That's usually what the whatsapp groups do, talk crap and at the last minute arrange something constructive.

Could you maybe list some names with their details of everyone you know and ride with in Gauteng? How many different groups are their and off heart, how many guys actively ride? Could you add me to one of the groups, got lots to ask and need some advice on bikes etc.

Super amped to hear people are still riding! Especially in JHB

Probably not the best idea to put your details such as name, telephone nr and location on a public thread...

It's ok - email addy's should be avoided due to spamming but name and number is fine. Add some words instead of number to your tell number if you feel like it.

Wow so few people doing Trials? Would have thought Gauteng of all places should have a big trials scene.

LWB - Got any details of the guys that ride here in Gauteng?

Not for your side of town hey bud.

There are plenty of people riding. I am more a roadie/dirt roadie and I presume when you say trails you mean MTB. There are plenty of spots in the Sandton area to ride. I would suggest joining your local club and connecting with them rather as most guys would prefer to do a local ride instead of travelling and then riding. My local club has a meeting spot that is literally around the corner from my house and majority of our club is from the area so everyone has a 5/10 minute ride from home to start/finish point.

LWB - I think you misunderstood me. Trials NOT Trails.

As in no seat, jumping up and down obstacles from a usually stationary position and gaps etc.

Quite dissapointed that so few people are riding Trials - I would have thought that after 10 years this brilliant sport would have picked up and gained momentum.

It's so big in other parts of the world, doesn't make sense. And the funny part is that it isn't usually only associated with BMX aged people (Young - Teen age), late 20's and 30's people are loving it outside Africa so we should be seeing older people still enjoying it.

Lets see if more people find this thread - And anyone that wants to start, looking for a riding partner, give me a shout on this thread.

  • 1 month later...

I'm from Paarl (near Cape Town) and I ride Street Trials (3 years xp). I usually meet up with the pure trial bike riders in cape town for weekend rides. Can't believe this sport is still so unpopular here in SA. (To check what I'm up to: Instagram @ChrisInspired)

My bike: Inspired Arcade 2016/17

Location: Paarl, Stellenbosch, Cape Town

I'm also open for any questions (like how to get a trial bike in South-Africa and what tipe of trials bike I'd suggest for you depending where you live)

cheers!
