I am not trying to hijack this thread and I am sure this has been answered many times in other threads, but I am going to post anyway:

I don't know what it is to ride in a group, since there are no groups at the back of the field.

I enjoy threads like this but doubt if I will ever be able to join a session like this as my definition of slow is totally different from your definition of slow (I feel chuffed with breaking 5 hours in Carnival City).

I find it difficult to find anyone to train with as it is totally impractical and unfair to expect anyone to slow down to 20km/h to wait for me.

I can see some improvement since I bought my indoor trainer a few weeks ago, so hopefully I will speed up a bit.  I managed to do 30km in the first hour of Carnival...... Downhill and down-wind......

Any suggestions or advise will be appreciated.  I love the sport and has loads of "fun", but wish I could just be a bit faster.  I suppose my weight is the biggest problem.  Topping 110kg is not so good for my Power to weight ratio.  It is coming down, but too slow for my liking.

Not to be blunt, but if weight is the biggest issue, address that first.

Ride more, eat less = faster

I would also suggest that you join a club of some sorts, this helps with motivation and you will learn loads riding with other people. Most clubs have slow, medium and fast groups.

Just keep it up, nothing motivates like progress:)

Couple of things, firstly if you can loose weight do (I am in the same boat +- 125kg with target weight been about 110 [as I am over 2m tall that would be equivalent to most average height guys at 80]) but don't let that be an excuse some really strong riders sit with a bit of extra weight.

Second as patch suggested join a club cycle lab has a d4 group who average around your speed and do 55km rides on Saturdays, it gives you the opportunity to ride in a bunch with people of similar ability

Thirdly and most important, in the wise words of Churchill never, ever, ever give up. Remember it never hurts less, you just get faster

Dude stick at it no matter what. Don't get disheartened and push to lose that weight . There is a cycling club here in Alberton called Albion wheelers . They a group at the back that is your pace I'm sure I have seen them on the wkds.

But stick at nothing is more rewarding that reaching that goal you have set, especially when you sweat blood and tears to get there. We all suffer to get fit some more than others . Kudos to you for dong what your doing instead of just excepting it ????

This aim of this thread is to (1) give back something some of us have learnt, (2) for others to learn, and (3) to hopefully keep it going for many years to come.

The fact that you are reading this, wanting to learn and perhaps join in one day should be good enough motivation to keep at it. #progression!

Many Albion Wheelers are ex Germiston Wheelers, so that's probably why they are a great bunch  :whistling:

We don't harbour any grudges, as a result of their migration - many of them are based in the far south and at the end of the day, everyone is cycling (the winner). Adds a bit of competition too (sometimes).

Include 3-5km runs in between your rides and you will be amazed how quick the weight will come down and the increase in your average speed. I started at around the same average speed and after a few runs my average speed increased by +-4km/h. I am now looking at other ways to increase it further, but I hv also realised that speed comes with many hours and months on the saddle, there is no short cut.

Thank you everyone for the advice given so far.

Just a bit more information:  I have come done from about 121kg in May to about 112 now.  Slow progress, but it is coming down.

My Wahoo Kickr has doubled my training kms because I have more opportunity to train now and I am already seeing some results.

I am a runner as well and is well aware that weight comes off when running, but I have trained and built up to a 21km in July (if I remember correctly) but then switched to mostly cycling trying to build up for the 94.7.  I have done 5 Two Oceans marathons and too many other marathons and ultras (up to 56km) to remember and attempted Comrades a number of times but failed to get to the finish line yet.

This is however a number of years ago (last Two Oceans in 2009) and somehow it seems that my age (51) is causing weight loss to be much more difficult that it has been in years gone by.

I am 1.91m, so my ideal weight is maybe in the mid 80's, but will be very happy with a 95.  I have not weighed less than 100kg in the last 20 years, even with all my running.

I am a data freak and will analyse and study my training data to try and improve and is in constant competition with my previous training sessions.

My FTP has been about 180W @ 120kg and now it is about 210W @ 112kg, so I have improved my W/kg quite a bit and I can see a sizable increase in speed up hills, but there is still a lot of work to do as most of my speed loss is on hills.  On a perfectly flat road I can maintain 30km/h, but up a 4% incline I struggle to maintain 10km/h

Sitting@89, I see you are from Strubensvalley.  That is at my back door.  I am in Radiokop.

And BTW:  My avatar is not a photo of me.  It is just how I feel sometimes.  Hopefully I am not quite as bad.
