jeez reading this string is terrifying enough to never ride again with all these accidents...

Those Giro shoes that I bought from you are no more. I was wearing them when all this went down, and the sliding did not do them any good!!

There was a very good piece I read years back when racing karts around how your brain works wrt high speed driving. I have been looking for it for years.

At the risk of writing a bible it may explain what is happening to you and help you to understand the process to get well.

Basically it goes along the lines of your right brain being a very fast processor but hasn't got fine motor control.  Your left brain is very accurate but does not have a lot of processing power.

Left brain is the current and conscious brain and also aware of threats to your well being. the conscious brain. Right brain is the background brain and acts doing all sorts of things you are unaware of.

So what happens is your left brain stays in control until it sees there is no danger, or it has a template for what is happening. If it is okay and it feels no risk, it releases control to your right brain. Your right brain is likened to almost a  curator. Hence when you are riding along with your mates and chatting, everything is normal and you are not aware of your gear changes etc. Its that flow state, almost meditative. The left brain is okay, no threat around, so it has released control to the right brain. All is cool.

When you hit a bump, or something happens for which there is no prior experience or template in the left brain, a ll of a sudden you are under threat, it requires fine motor control which right brain doesn't have, so you twist the bars violently cause right brain tries to fix it but have the fine control etc. It quickly quickly cocks it up and now says sayonara and drops this on the left brain which wakes up and tries to stop you dying (which it thinks you will do) Now big stuff is happening and you are in trouble. The left brain takes over but doesn't have enough processing power and gets overwhelmed. Then the right brain tries to step back in and again makes major moves rather than the finer control which would save you. And then you crash because you have driven in to the obstacle and pothole etc.

You get the picture. We have all been there. This is why you ride in to the rock you are looking at etc.

So to overcome this and make your left brain happy what you do is you build templates of what will happen when sh^t happens. You need to be able to simulate that feeling of losing control and recovering it. What happens is that the left brain becomes comfortable with the sensation, it's seen it before and it doesn't get all worked up and realizes it's okay not life and death. THis is why you get used to recovering controlled slides etc,

But when you do fall off your left brain says no sorry mate last time i felt this we nearly died so i am not releasing control. THis is what i think you are experiencing.

So to fix it you slowly have to build the templates up again that your left brain doesn't feel overwhelmed. Simply put go slowly and take risks only when you are comfortable with where you are. If you have a near death experience then it's likely to be a big hurdle, as the last time it released control you nearly died.

This is pretty deep wiring - it's not outside of the plausible that you should talk to a head doctor aka quack. If you took a big hit to the head it's even worse...

Hope that makes sense - just take it slowly. If something happens that you have another incident you will be even further back. I have had 3 x front wheel washouts in as many months and as result am riding a lot slower. I am pretty sure its all the same story....

Interested to know why your handlebar "dropped"?

I hit a little bump and my stem bolts were not tight enough, dispite the bike shop confirming all is well i told myself i will never use them again for a setup besides a minor service or parts.

That story makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck - what happened to your foot after that stopping maneuver !

I came down that same steep decent on Sunday and some aunty hit a sudden right into one of the side streets just before the main road through Kalk Bay and I discovered for the first time how poor the stopping power of a road bike is downhill at a bit of speed. I am 95% an MTB rider with nice discs to stop chop-chop.

My shoe was destroyed but luckily the heel was well protected and having a fancy carbon sole actually made a difference for once.

makes sence. Thank you very much. I will do this and keep you posted.

Yes my helmet also went down the drain. Big impact and a little slide. Thank goodness for bells return policy

I reckon this is very true with one caveat. All the template making should rather happen when you are 12,not 40!!

When I needed to rely on a template most of all, I could think of was flap your arms faster and pray. The broken hip and vertebra unfortunately proved I never actually took flight. #fookinrightbrain

Interesting reading, about the brain and how it works.

Makes perfect sense to me, basically self preservation I suppose..... Will have to work on those templates!

After I broke the "Ball" off the end of my Femur, it took me a few years  to beat my Strava Segments downhill again - but they thankfully have all been replaced with much faster one's. (despite braking a scapula and dislocating a finger in between)
