So who all is gonna be dot watching for the next week?

Predicitons?

I hope to see both Sanlam Painted Wolf and Merrel Adventure Addcits at the top end of the field and I think they have the pedigree...

Will be tough though with Seagate and other top teams there but can certainly say they are gonna have a better week than the rest of us stuck in offices for the next week or so...

I remember watching some adventure racing on a channel many years ago. Was very interesting to watch the tactics sleep/no sleep etc.

Any idea if this will be televised somewhere in the world?

YES!!!! was just about to start this thread myself.

here are our two teams in the preview

https://youtu.be/RnjqUQucuyk?t=938

it kicked off 12:30 local time, so about 5 hours into it now. Our guys are at the sharp end already.

The course has got a mega crapload of paddling in it. 180km out of 600 is about double the normal weighting, AND it's got a mix of boats too (3 person sit on top and 2 person surfski between the team of 4).

live tracking is here

they have a daily upload on the youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK5ccfaO44syJ0ghpIDRmyw, done by The Crew (Eric and Viv). These guys are classic, they travel to loads of crazy places with their camera kit. (they are slowly releasing their stuff from the local SA race we did in May - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3QGZfApUJrY)

you were probably watching the ECO CHALLENGE this was done by Mark Burnett of survivor fame. it was pretty popular and really hope he would take it up again.

I think that was it. I remember one of the teams (Team Nike I think it was. They were chasing Tean Salomon if I recall. IT was a loooong time ago) going into a convenience store looking for food and all they did was read labels to see what they could buy that contained the most number of calories in the smallest pack size.

They were navigating through some mountain range in the states and had to choose to sleep or carry on as one of the team members was suffering badly with lack of sleep. They even included a section of inline skating. There was paddling as well if I recall.

Was an epic and interesting watch to see what these guys and girls were capable of and how far they were prepared to push their bodies over a couple of days. They had to locate waypoints as well.

I really hope that he does take it up again, but I'll have a look for the Youtube channel for sure.

Do yourself a favour and watch a documentary The Last Wild Race- about the patagonia expedition race...

There should be daily summary videos on youtube, will post them here if there are.

There is lots of coverage on social media as well.

here you go. A media byte with Mark Collins forecasting the first big nav error that took them from 4th to 10th!

I see they made a second nav error before the compulsory hike a bike section last night as well.

Naturex and Estonia made good time through the night and earlier today. Adventure medical kits also going strong.

If you think the All Blacks are dominant, the kiwi Seagate team are not far behind. They've won the last 2 world champs and are about an hour ahead after 34 hours

Merrel are on leg07, a mtb section and sitting in 6/7, about 2:45 off the leaders

Painted Wolf (who are looking lank sexy in their Sanlam blue kit) are a further hour back in about 14th, but are making good ground on the teams around them

the organisers of Expedition africa are there in Aus, and are posting great updates

otherwise there are live posts on the merrel page, like this one:

What a disappointment for the team to arrive at TA 4 in Kioloa after 18 hours non stop racing to be told their resupply box, out of the 97 sent here, had disappeared, presumably stolen.

Probably twenty minutes into a 9 hour MTB leg, one starts thinking of the meal awaiting you at the end. A large portion of the monotonous ride through the night is occupied with trying to remember which freeze dried delight you planned for this occasion and you recall the box of sweet creamy custard and maybe some juicy fruit that you packed into the box as well as all your nutrition for the next leg.

Merrell went on their way, cold and hungry, with 38km of beach trek (fastest predicted time of 8 hours) ahead of them before seeing their next transition box.

EDIT - not stolen! Box was later located on wrong truck. The team shall eat again!!

Meanwhile, their progress has been strong through the day on the beach and now back on the kayaks.
(Maybe this is a new tactic they could employ in the future? Put all their My PVMButtaNutt Tree Nut Spreads and Llama Bar in the last box only and they'll race each other to get there...?

Here we have three team mates in the plastic sit on top, with tweet and the bags in the faster surfski behind. it seems to be a bit of a juggle trying to find best combination, and half the teams tried this over just spliting 2:2

that's a dog leash...used as a towrope on the bike legs

Looks like Team Merrell dropping off the pace slightly, hopefully just tactics.

They're 11th and Painted Wolf in 10th now.

So great watching those dots and seeing some of the route choices on that bike leg.
