I'm looking for 15 entry level  helmets. Was looking at Scott Watu or the like. If you know where I can find them or you are a shop that can supply me with an invoice preferably before 30 November please let me know!

Or would any suggest I simply buy the Makro or Checkers Hyper specials? We will be using it at work for commuting/getting around.

Thanks!

What size and what price would be entry level?

good question

i need to buy some relatively soon.

I will need 10 of them. Bunch of kids I see riding from Macassar into Somerset West. All on bikes, all good kids, all trying their best not to let their situation influence them to become something they dont wont to be. So thought I could give them a hand.

But the question that keeps cropping up is "how much helmet" are you buying for R200 or R300 bucks?

I mean those extreme cycling helmets for R300, will they protect a skull in a fall?

Think around R500 would be great. Not sure about the R200 Checkers model's quality? Would they last a year plus of everday use? Would definitely look at the Sportsmans one.

Slowbee, Have you looked at anything specific? I'm also asking myself if these really cheap one are really worth it, would they actually last a year of daily use, and also provide some decent protection, or am I being penny wise pound foolish to go cheap?

I looked at those sportsman stuff and am asking myself the same question about being pennywise and pound foolish.

The sportsman ones looked liked they could last a while of daily use. But, the worry is what happens in a fall. A minor fall should be ok, but a major one is going to be an issue. I mean these are not Giro lids. Perhaps thats the issue. I want to help - but to really help is going to cost alot of money and I have no way of knowing that the kit wont get stolen by some other dodgy oke in the township.

Im sure if the helmet passes the general safety standards then it should be fine. Normally theres a sticker inside the helmet to indicate if it passes the safety standards

This^^ there should be a safety standard that requires them to be up to spec.

Haha so you're fine with being charged more cause they come from a different shop?

Helmets have to pass minimum safety and impact resistance standards based on the country they are in. More expensive helmets may not be any safer, just more comfortable, more ventilated, and panders to a modern cyclists vanity.

But they'll be safe as most.

Its not about the shop, but the brand and model, which for me translated to quality and value for money .Saw some Scott, Bell, etc for +-R500 at some online shops, but not 15 in stock. Checkers and sportsmans Warehouse will definitely have 15, but I'm not sure about the quality (Will they protect and will they last). Was hoping either for some feedback from someone who has "brand name" helmets for sale to offer me a great deal, or for feedback from someone using the R200 model with some hands on feedback. Will check them for any Certification or tests passed, end then make a decision. Thanks for the input though.

I rode to school and back for 5years with one of those Xtreme cheapy helmets. I didn't know better about quality or vanity. I did crash with it a couple of times as I used it as my helmet for my first year of mountain biking as well.

Nowadays I retire my fancy helmets after 5years, but that is because of vanity and the fear of some invisible damage or glue that doesn't glue that lekker anymore.

If the checkers helmet passes the Snell or ANSI standards then I see no reason why you can't use them.
