Hello everyone

For about four years now I've been telling myself I want to get into mountain biking. I've tried it a few times with rented bikes and absolutely loved it. So I'm looking at buying myself a bike.

Problem is, I know almost nothing about bikes. I've been to a few shops and been offered entry level bikes ranging from R4000 to R10,000. I don't want to get ripped off but I also don't want to buy a terrible bike that won't last long.

I'm a 25 year old male, weighting 95kg and 1.89m tall. What type of bike should I get? Any brands you can recommend and where to buy them?

Thanks very much for your time.

First of all I recommend you buy an xl bike , preferably a 29er . Look second hand , make sure it is hydraulic disc brakes , decent fork as well as a descent groupset, shimano Deore or slx : sram x5

Brand doesn't really matter , it's personal preference, good entry bikes are silverback , merida, Titan and even momsen.

Found a Scott scale for R12000 , reckon you could offer 8000-10000 , has very good components and seems like a good bike .

Two things: you are almost certainly an XL. I am 1.87 and an XL is correct.

2nd: the first thing beginners upgrade is to tubeless tyres. Check if you have tubeless ready rims and tyres or you will be forking out money in a short while. Kinloss you ride in an area where there are no sharp rocks, vines, thorns, barbed wire, etc, etc

When you find something you like, post up the specs and pricing and you will soon get the feedback you need.

Remember that you will also need money for other things like a helmet (most important accessory) , shorts, gloves etc.

If you looking at a new bike Cycle lab has the Sola4 on special for R9999! If you pushed your budget up a little you can also find something with much better components....but this is also a never ending struggle  ....now if I just spend a little bit more I can get this, but then for a tad more I will get that.....

I'm 90kg 1.88m and I had a silver back sola 4, size L and it was a real great fit.

Sola 4 was a good entry level bike for me and you can pick up a used one on here for about 6500.

Next thing (regardless of which bike you buy ) is go for a bike fitment, even just the basic r250 on at cycle lab.

Hi everyone. I'm super late with the response but rest assured I read every one of the posts and they were very helpful. Thanks so much. I ended up getting an entry level Titan from Cycle Lab. I'm super chuffed that I finally did it. Took it out for a spin the next day and it was awesome! Thanks again everyone. Happy biking.
