Steerer change from taper to straight

Hi,

I have the following question. Can the steerer on a front shock be changed from taper to straight, and if so, who can do it ?

Reason for my question is that I am looking for a reasonably priced straight steerer, QR, 29", front shock, but this seems to be a very difficult task.

I was thinking of buying a taper steerer, QR shock and changing the steerer.

Any comments in this regard will be appreciated.

Can be done but you need A Jig

AFAIK there is not one in South Africa

They pop up now and then but they are rare , just keep your eyes peeled.

IF you have a headset that uses external cucps you can get ones online (Hope,Cane Creek ect. all have) that uses an oversized external cup to run a tapered steerer in a staight headset.

Again ONLY IF you have an external headset.

Good luck sir.

I have internal cups, but the adaptor suggested by Eddy looks like it can work.

Is every bike coming out with tapered headsets/shocks now ?

if its a 44mm internal bearing and cup or zero stack 44 headset then get a hope h-cup for the bottom. have been running a tapered carbon fork in my frame like that. but have since gone back to a straight steerer bouncy fork with a 1.5 adapter and have left to h-cup in place on the bike for when i upgrade

I have a 29er 100mm RockShox 30 TK Gold straight steerer fork that I put on one of my daughters bikes before she decided she did not want to ride where there are baboons. Ironically it needed an adapter for a tapered frame. Drop me a PM if interested.

Just make sure your bottom cup measures 44mm. Then get an external bottom cup or complete cup set for the tapered steerer to fit.

That's just messing with something that should not be messed with.

Rather get an adapter for your headset cups

Problem with adding an adapter below the headtube is you change the axle to crown height and the geometry of the bike. By raising the AC the bike becomes more relaxed, making uphills a bit harder but downhills easier.

Its like a 2mm or 4mm difference

The bearing is a 6.5mm and there is a housing that needs to hold the bearing in place and fit into the frame to hold it all in place. I think it's fair to assume that the bearing will be another few millimetres below the crown as the whole set up needs to create enough space for a 1.5" steerer to fit into a 1 1/8" hole. I would say it's at least 11mm. No big deal but it will relax the ride.
