I have aShimano XT FC-M8000-B2 /

700 Series: 36x26 T / 900 Series: 34x24 T

Its a 2 x 11 now

I want to convert to a 1x, what do i need?

Just a new chain ring? Or can i just remove the smallest cog?

I agree with Petri. Wayne at Rapide is the way to go. If you're Jozi based, they are in Kensington. Everything is on their website too.

Yup, all you need is a NW chainring, Rapide and Race Face are both well priced. I would start with a 32t and see how that feels.

You will also need single chainring bolts (if you do not use spacers), if you use spacers your current chainring bolts will work.

You should be able to do the whole conversion at home in 20mins for under a grand.

Try to get a oval ring. For me it was better for my 1x11 setup

Oval is pretty cool, made a big difference for me on climbs, but I could never get used to the uneven stroke and went back to a normal ring.

Keep in mind, although N/W chain rings are plentiful and easy to find, most of them are either direct mount or have a 104 bcd.

Your XT M8000 crank has a 96 bcd.

This is the one you need:

And yes, its 11s compatible.

As mentioned above get some spacers as well.

Or you could spend double that and get an original XT 1x11 chainring, but I would not bother:

Whats the recommendation? 34 as thats the biggest ? I never drop to lowest cog not in my last 3 bikes.

I would start with a 32t. Seems like the size that gets you good low end and top end gears.

Running 34T oval Absolute Black with 11-42 cassette, more than enough gears.  Probably no bigger than 32T if you have a 11-36

I rode my cousins bike today on a flat gravel road, and it was terrible with 32 up front.

34 with an 11-40 still gives you an easier gear than 32 by 11-36, which is pretty damn low already. I'd go with a 36 front ring paired with a 11-42 that I bought on Wiggle with some other bits and bobs to keep shipping to a minimum

The B2 crank has a chainline designed for boost axle (148mm) bikes.

If you have a boost axle bike all you need is the Shimano or other equivalent 96mm BCD NW chainrings ( I'm currently using Wolftooth). They have the spacer built in. You might need longer chainring bolts as the 2x chainring does not have the built in spacers.

If your bike is not boost axle then you might have issues with chainline and you might need additional spacers to bring the chainring in a few mm. However since you are already using this crankset successfully in 2x11 on your bike I think just the 96 bcd NW will work.

Choice of chainring size depends on wheel size, your fitness and riding area. If you are not using your easiest gears in your current setup then go with 34. Remember that your NW ring will be spaced further in than the big ring on your 2x11 setup. This might cause chainstay clearance issues if you go for a 36t or oval 34t. I can't run bigger than 34t round on my bike. Check out the clearance issue before spending $$$ on a new ring.
