May 2017 be an exceptional year to all...

Question about fasted rides?

1. What is the benefits of fasted rides?

2. How long should fasted rides be and at what intensity?

3. Should only water or supplement fluids (like Carbo Fuel) be used on these rides?

Very much Thanx

Don't know but 90% of my rides are fasted starts even up to 400 km.

On a side note looks like there are some awesome riding opportunities in Gaansbaai and surrounds.

1: Apparently teach body to burn fat sooner and save on carbs.

2: Mine normally 1 - 1.5hrs high intensity.  I've been doing a few long rides (4- 10 hrs) with very little carb uptake the last few months and  did a 3 hr medium/high intensity  unplanned one yesterday (forgot food) and was fine, so it seems to help with endurance rides, no idea about racing.

3: Only water and sometimes caffeine .. no carbo /fat etc.

Some even say one should do some very long (3hr+) rides without having water .. but not been that brave yet.

Worked well for me when I did it three years ago. Lost quite a bit of weight.  I think it would not be a bad idea to do it again this year after the winter here.  A good 90 minute burn to work on the commute and only breakfast when I get here.

I've been experimenting with IF (intermittent fasting) and the results are in: (caveat, fasting for me is coffee with/without cream, salt and water, but not all together)

First time was two days (Sun-Tues) and rode on Tuesday. Felt good and not fatigued at all. I ate dinner Tues-dinner Wed, then rode again on Thursday and felt good again. Rode on the Fri and again felt good.

Fastforward two weeks later and I did a 5d fast (Sun-Fri). Rode twice during the week and felt great. My Thurs ride was was my 3rd fastest all-time up Chappies and back - after 4 days of eating nothing. So pretty sure glycogen was zero'd. Felt great. Also dropped 4kg in the week, of which Christmas excess has seen 2kg come back, but that could be mostly water.

During this whole time, I was pretty much LCHF, so the 5d fast adjustment was quick and easy, though work stress took a toll, but was manageable even with no food.

A few things I've learned - I drank less. And bathroom visits were strange and infrequent. Sleep was amazingly restful, was clear-minded at waking, and mental energy was great.

I did it because I was curious, and being insulin-resistant, fueling on the bike during long rides is hit-and-miss - I just cannot get it right and and fasting just seems difficult to get wrong. I should state at this point, that my aim is not speed, but fun.

It used to be a case of drinks and gels on all rides, and now it's just water - I'm told I have plenty of fuel storage just above my belt.

In my experience

1. Your body learns to burn fat as fuel. The first few rides are not great, but once your body has adapted they are fine.

2. Low intensity always. Depending on what training I am doing at the time, 2 to 3 times a week. Mostly 2 hour rides, but have done 5 hours as well.

3. Nothing to eat before the ride. Only black coffee espresso before the ride and only water on the ride. If I am feeling bad, I will take a bottle with an espresso for on the ride as well.
