Cyclist on M5 this morning

I wonder if the roadie who was cycling on the M5 this morning just before 8 and at whom I hooted as he cut across the feeder lane from the N2 just after the Lieskeek onramp is a member of the bikehub.

If so I would like to challenge him to explain why he believes he is exempt from the laws that govern the use of that road.

If you do read this forum just note that I wasn't hooting at you out of admiration for your your form or speed (both of which were good btw) but because your illegal riding gives the rest of us a bad name. In case more than one oke hooted at you I was the white honda with the mtb on the roof rack.

So I challenge you to make yourself known and explain what justifies riding on the M5..

I haven't checked my dashcam footage but I'm sure I could go through it and ID you from that.

live and let live bro its not you that going to be squished by a truck

hate on a motorist if you have to not fellow cyclists

I have to agree with the OP - I don't particularly want to clean off a cyclist splattered over the front of my Ranger... I feel sorry for the truck driver in your story who has to live with that - not the cyclist.

So many beautiful roads in the Cape - the M5 isn't one of them.

So it was you!

<kidding>

Actually, it is important for us to hate on our fellow cyclists when they break the law like this. The screw it up for the cyclists who do obey the law. And get squished by angry motorists.

Name and shame.

I won't post the clip as I don't really want to "hate" on anyone - but I very much doubt that I was the only motorist who was annoyed by him.

I think the point is that if he is in an accident it is likely that he will not be the only casualty of it as sudden events at speed cause mayhem on a freeway as we all know.

And - the motorist doesn't see <insert name here> - they see cyclist which by default becomes you and me and everyone else who gets on a bike. So by breaking the law so flagrantly this cyclist makes the next time the motorist is in a situation where he needs to give way to a cyclist that much more impatient.

What I would really like is for this oke to read this thread and decide - "Y'know - that box Mamil has a point - reckon I'll stay off the freeways"

not personal so don't get all excited ok

this is a cycling forum we are supposed to be a community of cyclists - not a bunch of people who hate on one another

if I want to read how much people hate us id go on fekbook or a 4x4 forum

and bad news most motorists hate us anyway our behavior will never change that either way

just ride your bike and live and let live

unless its a motorist then you can trash the bugger :whistling:

Problem with the M5 particularly is it start off as a normal urban road and then becomes a freeway illegal to cycling traffic. AND ... too many cyclists remain unaware of the legality regarding that stretch of road, I think mainly because many believe the rule only apply to 120km zones (or they just don't care?).

The part the OP is referring to is the most dangerous of the whole stretch, having cars just entering from the Rondebosch on-ramp and 3 lanes converging to exit the Cape Town off-ramp. Done it myself in the past so aware of the perils. Stopped since becoming aware of the rule (much discussed after the death of the cycling and motor cyclist on the M3).

Yes exactly there - M5 headed towards Milnerton - I was joining the M5 from the N2 direction airport.

It is definitely illegal to ride a bike there although if you are on a MTB there is a horse path that runs parallel to the M5 just a bit further on that one can legally access from Oude molen village.

If it is this area which I understood it is, then yes, it is illegal as that is all freeway there.

I think a stern warning to the guilty cyclist is good enough, if he does it again, then his stupidity...

If not, then, lesson learnt....

If he get's knocked over, again, his stupidity... The reason why it is dangerous is because of the speed and braking time a driver needs on the said motorway to come to a halt, which is alot longer than a normal road with lower speed limits...

C'mon, let's be nice this year and try and change the hub to be a pleasant place again... (wait, I'm just kidding, as you were!)
