Garmin 520 stops linking to GPS when Powertap hub battery flat

This is more a finding than a question.

Hope this saves a couple hubbers mental health.

Over the last three weeks my Garmin 520 had stopped picking up GPS signal when I went out (road) riding.

After each ride I would look at the settings and as luck would have it, I would more than likely go out on my MTB and it started working again.

Over the last week I have only been going on the road bike and the Garmin hasn't worked once. I downloaded the new software update, but still nothing.

Yesterday I went to Garmin and guess what, the fricking thing starts working and picks up GPS when the techi switches it on, he then proceeds to give me that look and hands me back the device.

This morning I go out and the Garmin (must be another name for Satin) doesn't work. The whole ride I am planning what I am going to say to the techi at Garmin.

At the end of the ride one of my mates says to me he had the exact same problem with his 520, the problem resolved itself when he replaced the battery in his powertap hub.

There you have it hubbers, your Garmin 520 stops picking up GPS and/or any other signal when your powertap battery is low.

hahahah wow that is very odd!

thanks for the heads up! I didnt' have the same problem with the 510 yet, but wonder if it can happen due to firmware updates.

Very strange this. I have a 520 paired with Stages on MTB and PowerTap on roadbike and I don't disable the sensor when not in use. GPS works fine even when riding other bikes.

Harley Davidson bikes have an antitheft proximity fob...Bike doesn't start if fob is within 1M.

How many guys get to their bikes ..it doesn't start.... phone.... Harley dealership...bike collected bike Serviced, bike delivered ...Around R4000.

More than likely its the battery in the fob

It only seems to jam the Garmin when the battery in the powertap wheel is running low.

I notice this morning that a screen popped up when I turned the Garmin on that noted "Power meter battery low". I just accepted and move on and Garmin didn't work.

I used the Garmin on my other bike and it worked perfectly, granted I don't have a power meter on my MTB.

I only found this out this weekend - the powertap Hub acts like a PM, cadence sensor AND speed sensor.. Now I can save 200 grams and take my sensors off!

I can understand how the hub measures power (strain gauges), speed (it needs wheel revolutions to calculate power) but how on earth does it measure cadence?! Does it detect which ratio I'm in?    .

If so, what else does it know about me? #absolutepowercorrupts
