29er Wheelset

Hi Hubbers

My Giant XTC front wheel is shot and need some help in deciding on a wheel set.

I have 2 sets in mind, the Mavic Crossride or Rapidè TR29-25.

Both sets have great reviews which make it harder to choose.

Both seems to be bullet proof with the Rapidè slightly lighter and with a 25mm internal where the Mavic comes with 21mm. The Mavic's looks nicer to me personally with the 24 spokes but I also read that more spokes is better for MTB.

Also, after sales service, with Mavic being a big international company vs dealing with a small SA company, although i have only read good things about dealing with Wayne.

The Mavic's also comes in at about R1k cheaper than the Rapidè's.

If there are any other options below R5k I'm also willing to look at those. As long as the wheels are strong as I am on the big side of the scale.

Thanks for your help

I am currently in the same situation and looking at the same two wheel sets.

I am leaning towards the Rapide wheels for a couple of reasons.

1) Wayne's support and service can not be compared to wherever you will buy the Crossrides.

2) 32 Spokes, in my opinion, will be better if you are a little heavier than the average.

3) I heard that the Mavic spokes are not as freely available, if you need to replace one quickly.

4) I believe the Rapide freehub is of better quality than the Mavic.( probably the deciding factor )

That being said, they are still 25% more expensive than the Mavic's, but worth it in my opinion.

I just put hope pro 4/Stans Crest wheels on and man am I happy as a pig in sh!t, but the Arch will be better for the larger lad(I hover around 65kg only)

Thanks, they must have updated it as i was on their site earlier today and didn't see it then. How does the ECC Hubs compare to the Hope one's on the other ZTR's?

Havent used the ECC, but hope hubs are fantastic , id spend the extra bucks for them

Honestly I'm also leaning towards the Rapidè's from a spec point of view.

I believe the previous generation Mavic's spokes are the problem when it comes to sourcing. The new one's are apparently freely available (this is according to my LBS)

But as you say, I don't mind spending more on a wheel set that's going to last

I've just had Arch EX Mk3's built onto XT high flange hubs that I got for a steal from CRC (R700.00 for both to be exact).

Total wheel build was 5k.

Super happy with the Arch EX rims.

And yes, I know the XT hubs are'nt Hope's, but I'm a bit old school and like to be able to service and adjust my hubs and I am not worried about weight too much. Its a combo that works for me.

I had a Mavic Crossride wheelset and currently have a Rapide TR29 wheelset.

The Mavics were meh in my opinion; too heavy (I ride a steel framed bike and I'm no weightweenie, but they were noticeably heavy in the hand and on the rides) and too few spokes for my liking. I've only had extremely bad experiences with Mavic after sales locally, in fact I still have a bust wheelset that I bought brand new in 2013, only rode for 2 or 3 months before I had an accident and since then has been sitting in my garage as no one in Cape Town could rebuild them for me, and I went to all the LBS's I knew of at the time who were all in contact with Dragon? and some other big place.

On the other hand, I like my Rapides so much that I plan on getting another set of the same. Like now'ish. I've never owned a 'high-end' wheelset but the Rapides are decent quality, easy to service (not that I have done this yet, but I did strip them for fun), easy to find new bearings for them and switching axle standards is the easiest thing ever. I have mine set up on my gravel bike.
