We should take primary position on the road... Primary is safer

Unfortunately in SA if you took the primary position you would most likely be run down from behind... no one has enough patience

We should take primary position on the road... Primary is safer

On a road with a lane reserved for cyclists such as in the cradle. There is no need to take up the whole lane.

Saw it again this morning, two riders next to each other in the cycling lane having a chat at a leisurely pace. Two faste rider having a chat side by side, overtake slower riders, and they en up exposed in the road where cars and bikes travel.

It's a recipe for disaster, and I dont see an end to it anytime soon.

Not to detract from how sad this is, but...

The Cradle is a mess, and I honestly can't believe there aren't more incidents.

I had to travel a section down Krondraai yesterday. At one stage I came up to 2 cycles riding side-by-side, with the leftmost cyclists on the dotted yellow lane. At the same time a group came from the front, with the person on the right of the group being on his right of the solid while line.

As you can imagine, this left absolutely no space for a vehicle to drive.

We are our own worst enemies.

We do not own the road...that mentality needs to change. It is everyone's right to use the road, as with the OHS act in construction it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out what is dangerous and what not.

I hope all involved in the incident can make a full recovery

Sorry but i am a bit confused...  I thought bicycles were allowed on South African roads ?  so I don't understand why motor vehicles cannot overtake in a proper fashion as if overtaking a car when then have to overtake a bunch of cyclists ?

From what is being said here it seems that cyclist must hide in the shadows and not be on public roads and motorists shouldn't respect cyclists....

Who cares if two cyclists are over the yellow line... the motorists must behave and overtake correctly.

Riding in the middle of the road might make you more visible, but it is also exactly the reason motorists absolutely hate cyclists. Blathering on about 'your rights' and 'rules of the road' and all the rest of it is academic when you have two tons of car piloted by a cyclist-hating lunatic bearing down on you. I've always found that riding as far to the left as I can makes people behind more courteous and considerate because they can see you are making an effort to stay out of their way - and instead of getting angry, they tend to wait until clear.

Says who? There's no guarantee of that anywhere in the world, and especially not in SA, or so I gather.

With all due respect, but what ...?

Perhaps I didn't express myself correctly. 2 guys in my lane, traveling in the same direction as me; a buch coming from the front, with one of them in my lane.

Where do you expect my car to physically fit? I'm not talking about overtaking anyone?!

Sit behind the cyclists and wait for a safe overtaking opportunity... like your supposed to do... you don't have to fit anywhere at 80kmh...

Bottom like is cyclist have right of way as they are vulnerable road users and weekend at the cradle is it full of cyclists and motorists should expect holdups and lots of cyclists in the road... and drive accordingly.

Let's leave out what the law requires, and what the designation of the Cradle cycle lane system requires for both parties, but if there's no mutual consideration by both parties, cyclists and motorists, in such situations to accommodate the variance of human nature, it'll just lead to anxiety, aggression and confrontation.

Any updates on the condition of those injured?

That's what we should be worried about now.

Fisticuffs can done on a separate thread maybe, there are plenty to choose from if you want to fight about cyclists rights to use the road, or riding two abreast etc

Being both a cyclist and a motorcyclist and riding both in the cradle, it's a mixed bag. THis was bound to happen. And dont demonize the bikers - most of them have a right to be there as well.

Doing a blind U turn is the most dangerous manoeuvre you can pull in any vehicle and too many people do it (me included this last weekend as my wife was behind me). FWIW I think this should be strictly banned in all cycling training. If you do it in a group or see someone do it then they should be censured.

Its not all about the motorbikes going fast. THe bikes are in their place on the road, the cyclists are becoming a nuisance as they occupy the yellow line and then a lot of the road because they insist on riding abreast or in bunches and chatting, plus the grass is overgrowing the road and the sand has washed in to the road in places forcing them wide in to the traffic path.

Its a confluence of small events that is making it more dangerous:

Massive increases in the number of riders on the cradle

Less skilled riders who are unaware and are excited to be out there with their friends pulling risky manoeuvres.

Lack of maintenance in terms of sand washed on to the road, bushes and trees overhanging and the problem of riders in bigger bunches because of the increase in numbers (ride with a  bunch/safety in numbers).

The cradle is inherently safer than many other places when the proper approach is used and account is taken for other road users.
