So, what's the best? Duct tape with tubeless valves (don't want to bodge those...), or split tube method?

I can see the dt holding up for a few sets of tyres, but then again, 2x20" tubes aren't too expensive-just wouldn't want to reuse them too much I would think?

The American Classic rim tape would work.

Made at 30mm for the Wide Lightening wheelsets.

Cape Cycle systems supply pretty much every single bike shop so........

28mm is the widest sold at the moment by Cape Cycles. R1,200 for shop roll for 12 sets, 24 wheels.

32mm, 37mm and 42mm available OS.

Talk about a post for a posts sake. Clearly says for 19-25mm rims.

And it clearly says in my post I don't know if they make for a 30mm rim.

There is a difference in the material normal 3m/sellotape duct tape is made from compared to gorilla tape.Gorilla tape is way stronger and will last just as long if not longer other rim tapes. Builders warehouse no longer stocks gorilla but outdoor warehouse stocks it in the 25mm and 48mm rolls. Use a craft knife to cut through to desired width. Apply 2 full layers , take valve core out and insert valve body from outside to show where the hole for valve needs to be. Use a 5mm drill bit gently by hand to make the hole with valve body to position drill bit.

I use a pin and then gently push the valve through.

A drill bit seems a bit excessive.....

talking about posting for posting sake, but maybe I wasn't clear or am reading your post wrong or whatever.... AM wide lightening wheels are 30mm ID.

His rim is 30mm ID. So surely one of the said tapes made by the same said company would work a charm?

Also, Popcorn Skollie, the OP said he wouldn't use Gorilla tape because it soaks up his sealant and weighs a ton so I was trying to suggest alternatives to it.

Sealed up some 31.5mm ID rims with Gorilla tape last night. mmmmm... worked a charm as usual.

Alternatives to Gorilla tape was the content for suggestion I gleaned from the OP..... just saying

Then why not research it rather than adding a picture of the inappropriate product where the OP had already the width as being too narrow?

So what does Wide Lightening use then even if it is 30mm wide? I'll tell you, it's 32mm. Maybe I should have said so earlier. Apologies.

Here's a link to what AC do make for after-market fitments. https://amclassic.com/index.php/tubeless-parts/tubeless-tape-shop-roll-for-12-wheel-pairs.html

Just a quick point. The wide lightning rims are tubeless ready. That means that the bead is already tubeless compatible and ALL that needs covering are the spoke holes. IE you need not cover the entire width of the rim if you use good tape and apply it properly.

If you do a ghetto system, though (tube) then it needs to go side to side as there's no adhesion between the tube and the rim.

Gorilla tape (not duct tape), one layer is enough if the width is right, ghetto works but if you burp a tire you may not get it to re seat.  I use them on real entry level rims (direct contact with nipples and Schreader valve holes).  Otherwise Gorilla all the way.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Here is what I did:

removed stans tape

Cleaned rim with acetone

Two layers of stretched insulation tape

One layer of "Filament tape" bought at Mica for 50bucks

Cut an x in the valve hole with stanley knife

New valve

And all is good , washed with soppy water and not a single bubble
