Just reading there I see CAT3 averaged 36kmph in one event last year --- am I the only Mamil who finds that a bit intimidating I wonder?

Going to have to do some serious training to get faster.

I wonder when Thor's going to come tow me around his kingdom again?

The best form of training is

RACING

It'll be a good test for you

You will get dropped

And every time you stick for longer

Ask any seriaas racer - there's only one way to your highest potential

Pfff! That's for girls!

Don't worry, the way I'm riding now I'll be hanging on for dear life right along side you :D

I've gathered this is the case - I got addicted to watching a youtuber called the Vegan cyclist for a while - POV with commentary of his criterium and circuit races (which I now understand the meaning of!) - hectic stuff.

Looks like a lot of fun.

Then this clip reflects the aches, pains and gains of being a racer

Any updates regarding the up coming races?

I see Lady Loch has been cancelled

Does anyone know how far ahead WPcycling will have the calender sorted?

Posted

Yeah Lady Loch cancelled as the application to City was rejected.

Next WP race is Big Bay crits which is Sunday 2 April as far as I know.

Then the race on Sunday 30 April we are waiting on City of Cape Town to approve our application then I will post further details.

It will only be a 1 day race not multiple day as timing for this is to short notice.

WP are looking at doing a multi day stage race during the winter league.

How it works is every race is different, you get Crits(Criterium) race which are usually on a tight course of around 1.5 - 2kms per lap then you race for 30mins + 1 lap(at the bell) for CAT3, CAT2 45mins + 1 lap and CAT 1 is 1 hour + 1 lap.

Then you get circuit races which are bigger than a crit at say 4kms + and picture something like Killarney race track and again this is time based + 1 lap.

Then you get road races which is usually on a loop and these vary but usually around 70kms for CAT3, 100Kms CAT 2 and CAT 1 100/120kms. These races usually run simultaneously with all 3 CAT's racing 5mins apart for time constraints.

You should def come and check it out if you want to take your cycling to the next level. This is not PPA fun rides this is proper racing with constant attacks, team tactics and guttering as there is prize money and prizes up for grabs for all CAT's as well as leaderboard and series winners.

Bankie, to confirm as per your earlier post, would the big bay crit 'distances' be as below?

Cat 3 : 30 min + lap

Cat 2 : 45 min + lap

Cat 1 : 60 min + lap

Not want to be the sour duck, but R300 entry for 30 minutes is perhaps on the steep side?

It is a bit steep but it is to encourage riders to join a club as club riders get discounts to enter these races.

So to get the full discount you have to do this:

 - join a club - R50 discount

 - enter online by Wednesday midnight the week leading up to the race - R50 discount.

So R200 entry fee.

Just for interest sake, if I do my first race in CAT 3 and I smoke the field and realize that I should probably race CAT 2, can I change mid season?

I suppose I should actually ask it the other way around: If I do my first race in CAT 2 and the field totally smokes me and I realize I should probably race CAT 3, can I change mid season?

Cool thanks! And as far as I know PPA counts as a club [emoji106]

Come start in Cat 3 with me and then if good enough you can move to Cat 2.

As far as I understand, you can move between the Cats. But rather work your way up than down!
