I need some real world advice....29er full sus Pilot, average weekend rider enjoys racing mid to upper part of field.

Question is do i spend a load of cash on a 1300gr set of carbon wheels or a 1450gr set of aluminium that will be less than half the price, coming from a standard set at 1800gr odd. What to do?

That depends on your weight (in my opinion). I am around 100kg, and although there are carbon wheels out there that can support my weight they will not last as long as a good set of alu hoops. If however, like you said, you race mid to upper part of the field, I assume you are not 100kg, and in that case, a carbon wheelset will be really good - I find that they are a heck of allot stiffer, and overall improves your ride allot.

If you looking at AC Race, they have a very short life span.

I'd reconsider your options if thats the case.
