Any cycle club rides on Friday or Saturday that us out-of-towners could join?

East Coast Cycling Club will be doing a gentle ride from the carpark at Suncoast Casino to Breakers Hotel in Umhlanga Rocks and back on Saturday morning. We leave at 5.30am.

What would the route be? How safe is it to ride the M4? So if I would want to ride up to Ballito typically? (Some really nice rollers on that road...)

I can't tell you, at this stage, exactly what the route will be, but it won't be along the M4 at all. It will follow the suburban roads.

When we do our regular club rides, we join the M4 at Umhlanga and ride towards Ballito and back, getting off the M4 at Umhlanga again. The M4 is never 100% safe, so caution needs to be taken, and I would not ride alone if possible. We always leave very early in the morning before the traffic picks up.

There are road works on the M4 just South (I think) of Sibaya Casino (they are underpinning the road) - not a lot of room for cyclists at the moment.

This past Saturday we went for a 54km ride which included a portion of the M4 from Umhlanga to the Umdloti offramp and back, so you can see the current state of the road works.

Watch the video from about 48 minutes where we join the M4. The road works start at about 54 minutes. Excuse the poor quality of the video at this point, but we were riding into the sun!

You can see the road works in better light on our way back, at about 1 hr 12 minutes.

Looks like a nice chilled ride ride - think I will try drive down from Ballito on Saturday morning and join you guys.

Hi.  Justa heads-up.  The Saturday ride is a real light, 35km leg-spinner and will start at 6:00am this Saturday - NOT 5:30am (so will give you more time to get through from Ballito).

Cheers.

The route takes us from Suncoast Casino alomg all the subburban roads to Umhlanga.  You are NIOT allowed to riode on the M4 between Durban and Umhlanga but you can go on from Umhlanag northwards.  The road is pretty good and if you stick to the left you will be fine.  Not too sure I would ride it (or any other road) alone though.

Cheers

Is there an Expo this year? Last year was a couple of random stalls squeezed in the smallest available space.
