The marshals were part of a requirement for opening the area up.

What do they do? Some are placed to prevent entry to off limits areas others are put in places to provide security/early warning in areas where crime has happened in the past. Because of them we have, let's call it 'assisted', several dodgy characters to leave the park, driven injured riders off the mountain and assisted injured and lost hikers.

Regardless of whether it was an issue in the past it is now because of the burnt gum trees. Like it or not there are a small percentage of people that ignore signage, requests, advice etc and head straight into the off limits areas and every single time that happens it strengthens SANParks case for requiring the marshals.

Ok. Good to know.

Thanks for the explanation.

This bit caught my attention - How "dodgy" are we talking? It sounds clearly like potential muggers as there were before the fire.

These dodgy characters will once again roam freely once the park is fully re-opened and the marshalls are no longer there to keep an eye out?

We have our moments that's for sure, like the two guys that decided to sneak in today and got pulled by SANParks staff.

R500 later that was a pretty expensive ride for them.

That said it really is a tiny minority of selfish individuals that are doing this.

The marshals costs are currently being covered by a very generous sponsor who is talking to his network with a view to making them a permanent feature in the future.

Obviously there are no guarantees but we are hopeful that the initiative can continue.

I would love to be able to tell you but he has, since we first approached him, insisted that we do not publicize his name.

I do now know he is involved in a whole host of charitable causes and accepts no publicity for any of them, so it appears to be just the way he does things.
