Well done Marlene. As previous posters have said aptly, its about gathering experience first.

Identify where your weaknesses are and work on them.

I always advocate skills clinics especially for most women (no offense - there is a lack of experience from childhood on a bmx and generally being more cautious and afraid). You did mention it was a fair bit technical. Find a good coach to then also work on other areas like climbing strength (intervals).

Then set a realistic goal for yourself next time out and improve slowly. It takes many events/races to gain experience, confidence and enjoyment.

It must always stay enjoyable....unless you want to win - then prepare for more pain.

As the old saying goes: it doesn't get easier, you just get faster.

ps Clarens is an awesome place to ride - and tough. Pity it is so far away for us in CT. Did the ultra and marathon last year. Was very cool

Hi all...

Just to let you know I got the T-shirt (medal)... It was quite a tough one... Hectic elevation and quite technical down hill... But the views were spectacular!

Couldn't do it under 4 hours... But now I know where I am and where I should be... My own frame of reference to work on.

And proud to say the body feels 100% with no painkillers or muscle relaxers... More than what I can say about my broken heart...

Thanks for your support!

Broken hearts mend best while riding a bicycle. Fact!

Hi Marlene,

I must say, you picked a very, very tough race as your first event. Well done on finishing !

I did not see one person riding up that last climb. The Sunday race was much easier.

Well done for having fun... And conquering the uphills. :)

Sorry for the other uphill. :( Riding your bike clears the mind, and mends the heart. And if that's not true I will eat my chamois.

Thank you! It was very tough! Got quite excited when I saw the 2nd waterstand But the downhill was more difficult for me than the uphills... Thats where I wasted some time.

But was a good learningschool... Will do the VanGaalen next....

Thank you! It was really very tough for me, and the downhill was more difficult for me than the uphills... But as you said, was an eye opener and I have a better perspective of where I am at the moment...

Will rely on the spinnng classes to build some stamina in these legs... Since I couldnt I find it on a shelf at Woollies...
