Durability of various 11spd mtb cassettes

No. Chains eat cassettes. Sheldon Brown explains it on his site, so I'm not going to regurgitate the whole story here again.

Buy steel if it makes you feel better, but all it's going to do is make your bike heavier.

All chains are not made equal however. YBN 10 speed do not appear to start out as good as an XT (checked with a chain checker) and go South from there. So bearing in mind the chain eating cassette thing, its probably better to invest in the best quality chain you can. Which ones are the best?

I have a Sunrace 10 speed 11-42 cassette and been riding it for the last 4 months and 1300km or so. I have swapped out one YBN chain for another with no ill effects. Shifts very well and wear looks normal.

XX1 Cassettes are 99% Steel Chromoly. Not heavy at all. In fact the one gear which is ALU (42 tooth) tends to age long before the rest.

I replace my cassette chain and N/W all at once then on the 30 day anniversary of replacement, I buy a new chain and replace chain . 30 days later I buy another new chain and replace that . I then just rotate the 3 chains every 30 days . My XT cassette is still fine a year and a bit later (not too sure on the mileage)

Exact issue I have - only the alu on both the XT cassettes I have replaced were worn. So I'm happy to hedge my bets with the Sunrace steel cassette..

That is my issue with Sram cassettes... you pay a fortune for a XX1 cassette (you can probably buy 2 sun race cassettes and have a bit of change) and when your 42t is worn you have to replace the casette at that price tag.
