Hi everyone,

I took my bike in for a service a while back and after that my seat post keep sliding down, about a centimeter per 10km. This is really frustrating as a low seat cause pain in my knee, not to mention having to stop several times during a ride.

I pulled the seat post out and found it very well greased. I have cleaned the 99% grease out but it still happens.

Any ideas what could cause this and how to fix it?

it is a standard Merida Big9 500

thanks

Sure that it was grease you washed off, and not carbon paste?

Don't think so. It looked like grease to me. Then again I am definitely not an expert on this field.

Only washed it off after the problem started.

Why would they put carbon paste on my bike? I have no carbon parts

Carbon paste is grease with graphite particles in it - graphite is a lubricant too in its fine form.

If you have an alloy or carbon seat post and steel or alloy frame then the grease is to prevent the seat post becoming a permanent part of the frame.

I get the point behind putting grease in there and at this stage I would almost prefer them to be  one (if at the right height) as continually stopping to adjust the saddle height is getting really frustrating.

Put some copper paste on it - bike shops are supossed to apply either that or carbon paste. That said, I have also come back from my LBS with grease all over the seatpost and the same thing happened to me. Don't know what the hell the guy though when he applied grease to a seatpost!

Have they given you back your seat post? I think the tube diameter on Merida is 31.6, they may have mixed your post up with a 30.9.

I believe they have. With out a doubt my seat still attached to it.
