Insurance for bikes for trip to France

Take a 28/11 cluster or compact gearing.... I have ridden a few of those climbs with a 25/11 and 53/39... can't say it was fun.... if I had had more gears I would have used them...

No shame in a compact 34 with a 30 or 32 cluster. 18km grinding uphill is demoralising.

The bikes are currently insured with Outsurance under their out and about but I suspect that won't do. I am going to go through my policy tonight and contact them.

Anyone have any comments on relying on Outsurance for covering lost/broken bikes while traveling overseas?

Sneaky option, I know, is just do it and claim, if you have to, when you get back. You are not going to be able to claim while you are there anyway. If they get stolen you will have an issue....

Contact one of the local insurance companies like Baloies. They can offer packages for insurance and medical insurance.

If you crash and need to be airlifted it is around 25k euros for the chopper.

I made sure the bikes are properly listed on my existing Outsurance policy. Their "out and about" covers bikes for theft and accidental damage or loss so if the airline breaks one in half I will be able to claim.

They are charging me R689/month for 40k replacement value per bike. If thats not reasonable I will shop around a bit more when I get back.

Interestingly enough its quite a bit cheaper per R to insure a MTB with them. My MTB is insured for replacement value of R20,520 for R198.26.

Road bike: R17.22 / R1000 replacement value

MTB: R9.91 / R1000 replacement value

This is a bit expensive.

My own bike is less than this for a higher value- R 470 for R 60K. I've also looked through the policies of some fellow hubbers who's bikes is also insured with their contents and vehicle and all are better by quite a margin.

Your welcome to pm me when your back.

(sorry if this is a bit too opportunistic)

Yup. Lots of roadies I've seen in the Alps have 3 ring setups up front. What's the point of doing a cadence of 30 for 10km straight?

My fiance had a 32 escape gear. Jason from Olympic said I'd be fine on a compact with an 11-28 as the roads in that part of the Alps don't ever go over 7%.

PAH! Lots and Lots of 10%+
