Reading power / cadence on Spinning Bike

Recommended Posts

Hey all, couldn't really find anything on this here so the new thread.

I have googled this and seen a couple of videos but a lot of it seems like guess work and a hack.

Has anyone gotten this right? I would like to connect my spinning bike to Zwift but to do this I need cadence or power readings. If i were to connect a Garmin cadence sensor to the flywheel as some videos suggest, the speed would just not be accurate and to buy pedals with power meters is just too expensive.

A Watt bike is also ridiculously expensive!

So my my question is, has anyone got it right? how did you accomplish it and how did you find the experience?

My 2c -

If you have a VA membership and your local VA has Wattbikes, go there.

For cadence problem, buy the new Garmin cadence sensor (not the old one with a magnet). No magnet, just an accelerometer inside the housing that counts your revolutions.

Power - from what I recall, one of the PM manufacturers sells a spinning bike specific LH crankarm power meter, might be 4iiii.

I have connected my Sigma cadence sensor and magnet to my spinning bike, and use the sigma heart rate strap, all is connected through the Wahoo app. I haven't added the speed sensor yet, planning to get round to it some day...

Above option was the cheapest, as I use the Rox 10 on my bike.

Not really, most are broken or not serviced properly.....................

Cadence, The new Garmin Cadence sensor.  I managed to fix the new type  Garmin speed sensor to the hub of the flywheel just with a cable tie. Works OK

However I did get the Garmin power pedals (now no need for cadence sensor the measure cadence as well. ) I have really enjoyed the pedals - worth it for me

I agree here but sometimes i just cant get to the gym or would like to do a session at home in the evening. I have tried connecting zwift at the gyms but seems like they run the old firmware on them as zwift doest pick the bikes up (Tried 3 gyms)

what type of readings did you get? did you have to hack and change wheel sizes to get the speed to read correct? What and where did you get the pedals? that seems like it would work the best.

do you then just use Wahoo to spin or did you connect it up to zwift?

If you have the cash have a look at the PowerTap P1 @ R18 995.00 or P1S (single sided) @ R11 995.00 pedals.

The pedals will pick up cadence and power and that is all that is really need to get Zwift, CVT or TrainerRoad working.

The P1 / P1S pedals do not require calibration on install and are like a normal set of pedals, install and forget.

Get thing is they can also be used on your road bike on the weekends......

Been on the P1 pedals for a couple of months now and have been very happy. Truly seamless installation, you only need to set the crank arm length in the bike profile on the head unit when switching bikes.

Just use it to spin, looking at its sharing options, it seems to have everything there but zwift!
