Noise from BB

Jules

Recommended Posts

My BB has started making an annoying click noise at a particular point in my pedal stroke.

I have checked that the cranks do not touch anything when rotated, so it appears that the noise is being generated inside the BB.

Anyone got any bright ideas as to what could be causing the problem? There doesn't seem to be any play in the cranks, either horizontal or vertical. It is a carbon Chorus Ultra Torque crankset.

Thanks ShaunH, good idea, will put different pedals on and see if the noise persists. Pedals are brand new though, so I don't think it's the problem.

Have you thought of a date for the soup kitchen? I was thinking it would be good to do it for foreigners who are sheltering in churches and police stations from our marauding xenophobic thugs. One of my colleagues was helping out at one of the police stations. I could ask him for more info if you like?

Had same problem. 3 bike shops told me it was a damaged BB. Spent R350 for a new one and the bike still creaked. The problem was eventually traced to the head set (which needed grease). The creak resonated down the frame tubing and it sounded as if it was coming from the BB.

I had that irritating click on both MTB and Road bikes, and never really found a solution until finding a rather useful website during a google search (http://www.jimlangley.net/wrench/keepitquiet.html)

In the end, after washing and lubing both bikes, the clicking sound went away. Problem was I washed from top to bottom, front to back and then lubed everything that needed lubing, so never really found the actually problem area.

Noise from BB is one of the most common complaints.  Could be just about anything as your brain tells you the sound is coming from where you are exerting pressure (crank/pedal/BB area).  Could be a multitude of things:

- Loose headset or worn headset bearings

- Pedal bearings or even the cleat contact point

- BB bearings

- Seatpost/saddle/seatube interfaces (check to see when standing if noise is there)

etc

You can try removing the pedals and applying some grease to the threads of the pedals. Then refit pedals
