Ja I got the card last week, just need to activate everything now and get the ball rolling.

Their website is a bit clunkier than Discovery's (and now THAT is saying something) but with enough care and work you can make it work.

Their app needs work.

Last post then i am done.

we rent expensive equipment to hospitals.

the type of equipment that is seldom used - so financially it does not make sense for a hospital to purchase outright. hence the rental.

Profmed - they have refused every case we have ever submitted. thats after submitting quotes, Dr motivational letters, ICD 10 code, all nappies. etc

GEMS. poor communication. we submit all the above documents multiple times as they tend to loose them. its because of GEMS we started recording all our conversations. that being said, they have authorised all cases after a week or two of back and forth.

Discovery. nothing needs to be done. it is listed as a minimum benefit.

aaaaah, now that's a different matter.

I was under the impression that you were talking about your run of the mill stuff. But yeah, if you're talking the big stuff, it's a lot easier to deal with the approvals with Discovery. Plus their hierarchy is pretty well sorted. Send a claim through, if it's been X days, escalate it, escalate again, then walk in to the client contact centre and say WTF okes.

But Furbz - good to know what you're involved in.

just remember...you wont be covered for three months..so you will have to double up for three months or take the risk

edit...or so I hear...

Only true if you've got a pre-existing condition, and even then in this case they'd still have cover for PMB's. If they'd been new entrants to the med aid sphere or been with their existing provider for less than 24 months, then it's a different story as 12 month condition specific waiting periods would be a possibility.

But again - only if there is a pre-existing condition.

Through Vitality at Discovery there are large savings too. Be careful assuming an entire scheme is cheaper because you chose 1 plan that may seem more affordable. Discovery is not more expensive overall and has had lower increases than Momentum. Ensure you know EXACTLY what you are gaining and losing by the move. You will also more than likely get underwriting as it is a voluntary move.

Meh. That little squabble is overblown. They're largely the same. Medihelp, on the other hand....

Agreed on the analysis part of things though. If a certain plan works for YOU, it may not work for your neighbour. It's important to factor all the circumstances into a recommendation.

Bit off topic but which life insurance and income protection service provider does bikehub recommend? #YOLO

#itdepends

PPS is (IMO) the best, but has the highest barriers to entry

Discovery follows that as they have the better of the rest.

The rest - swings and roundabouts tbh. Discovery led the rest for a long time, and still do. But they're slowly catching up. Biggest reason for that was the upgrade to 100% of your income on permanent disability. The others have a version of that, but they're mostly based on an impairment basis which means it's not as cut and dried as the Discovery one. Momentum is the closest to Discovery in this regard.

But at the end of the day it comes down to what fits best for you. I cannot definitively say X is better than Y in all cases. I can presume that one will be better in 80% of cases, but I'd still perform the analysis to determine if the premium fits the cover.

We went over from Discovery to Momentum in January, and luckily because a bunch of people from our company went over together, they waived the waiting period so we had cover from day 1, and this with my wife being 3 months pregnant at the time which was awesome.

The change saved me about R500pm and gave me just about double the cover I had with Discovery, plus with a mere 4 ActiveDayz a month I'm already getting about R100 back into my HealthSaver, meaning that the odd day when they don't cover 100% of my bill, my savings help cover the rest. Momentum is paying all 12 of my wife's gynae visits during the pregnancy out of my hospital benefit, i.e. my savings is still intact.

Best move ever i.m.o. I also have gap cover with TRA to cover the odd event should they not pay everything in full, so I'm pretty sorted in that area.

Thanks for the reply. PPS and Discovery where in any case my preferred options.

I can get into PPS but I currently have Discovery Health Insurance. Would the "discounts" due to being currently a Discovery customer sway the recommendation to Discovery?

Totally agree...and medihelp has good value for money if you find a suitable plan.

it depends entirely on the circumstances, so I can't say yes or no without actually doing the analysis for YOU.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Medihelp. Value for money. LOLz. They were good ~8 years ago. Now we just take people off them and put them on something that doesn't have an increasingly old and sick client base.

What's your take on GEMS?

From my experience dealing with all the medical aids when it comes to paying GEMS are the worst.Every excuse and takes months of phone calls to get paid.

Discovery pay the fastest but probably pay the least out of all medical aids so chances are there will be a co payment by patient.

Also contemplated the move from Disco to Momentum about 4 years ago. Momentum was cheaper by about 8% on a apples for apples basis.

I decided to rather stay with Disco, since up to that point I didn't had any issues with them. Still to date no issues.

A good friend had a very scary incident in beginning of march which landed him in Hospital, 7 weeks in ICU and will still be in hospital for about 3 months. All the bills of all the specialist, hospitals fisio and occupational therapist are over R 1 mil so far. He is currently in rehab and will be probably till the end of the year. all cost will be covered.

He only had one issue where the fisio put the wrong code on the bill. All bills have been paid fully without any hassles. He is on Disco's top plan, but I know he also has Gap Cover.

This experience and my own will make stay with Disco.
