Sore hands - help

Sorry if this has already been covered, but I can't find a similar thread. As I start to get more miles in again on my mtb, I am finding that the outside of my palms are becoming more and more painful after a few hours on the bike. This happened previously leading up to Sani last year, but I have not been doing the long rides since? I have the standard giant grips on my anthem and have recently upgraded my gloves to try and help. Can anyone suggest a grip or a solution that may resolve?

try changing position often and move your hands around - if that does not help try ice skating

+1 on saddle positioning.

A level saddle keeps you from sliding forward and putting more pressure on your hands-and scrotum...

Relieved a lot of pressure off my bottom and hands.

In addition to leveling your saddle, try raise you handlebars just a bit. I found raising your bars just by one or two spaces (5mm) seems to take a lot of weight off your hands and back onto your saddle. It can decrease hand pressure and numbness substantially.

Most of the above plays a roll.

Saddle level.

Hours in the saddle will cure it over time as you get used to it again.

Do you sit down mostly or do you stand up apart from the need due to the terrain but it helps to stand occasionally to get blood flowing.

Do you grip the handlebars tightly or do you relax your grip when you can.

Is there a lot of downward pressure on your wrists because it does some of the work your core muscles should do.

Have you got a camelback or backpack on your back when riding?

Do you stretch on downhills? Legs lowerback neck and arms.

Do you use high gears or do you spin mostly.

What else?

Could try other gloves with less or no padding near the wrist. Specialized make a fancy shmancy pair for ulnar nerve trouble. Has thicker padding in the centre of the palm area. Price quite thick too, put me off trying them. Towards the end and after long rides my fingers (pinky and ring f) go numb. Maybe similar prob to yours.

You'll probably find it's only the outside half of your ring finger that goes numb together with the pinky. That's carpal tunnel...

Had my right hand fixed about 20 years ago with an op, never got around to the other hand. Lefty now giving me seven kinds of hell on bike, but to fix it with op means 8-12 weeks of bike... not happening...

As mentioned - possibly play around with the position of your brake levers, I didn't think of that but it could work. From personal experience though, maybe invest in a set of Ergon grips - I had them on a previous mountain bike and I never looked back.
