Enjoy One Tonner 2017

Just realised this would be my 5th one in a row, didn't even realise I have been cycling for this long... Love this race for the extra dimension that added 50km brings to the normal PPA races

Some advice from an old-timer who have made every mistake in the book

Don't waste too much energy working up-front even if the pace seems slow. All those weak-looking wheel suckers will turn into powerful racers the last 25km coinciding exactly with when your powers start to fade. (and afterwards they will complain just as loud about wheel-suckers not doing their bit)

Don't waste energy chasing lost causes, if you get dropped on Helz or Botmaskloof, sit-up and wait for the next group and then watch as you pass all the tragic heroes who burnt themselves out chasing lost causes.

I am so glad this topic popped up so early in the week!

I just checked my results, this will be my 6th one, I have not beaten my 1st one tonner position yet, mostly as we do it as a team vibe I think.

Looking forward to this weekend, will be interesting to see how things pan out with the team racing starts.

Will be my first race since WACT. I did the grand total of one (not counting commutes) proper training sessions, but at least I'm only doing the medium...

How does the new race number system work?

You rock up on the day, they check what seeding you qualify for the day and give you a sticker with your seeding on it which you stick to your permanent number.

Easy peasy.

I like the new system so that you don't need to get a new number every time you re-seed. Seeding is now on the sticker in stead of the number.

It will also keep the groups smaller, what happened in the past is 150 people got an A in July each year, and hung onto that like nobody's business. Then everybody that was able to upgrade during the year did so to A. This then meant you ended up with 250 people in A, when only 150 were actually eligible.

Replace A with any letter in the seeding vibe.

I Assume I can also pick up my new permanent number at the venue?

So will they change it every year like previous years or this will be permanent as the word say?

Permanent for the year, otherwise there is no way to tell if someone has renewed membership or not. Also the sponsors on the numbers are probably only for one year etc.

How accurate are those pretty lines? Lost about 40 minutes of my lunch break clicking buttons.

Been using Windyty for the past two years and it is pretty accurate. Last two one tonners it was spot on.

Yeah, but in truth, you can say that next year it will be the same AND be right. but what about the heat? Last time I did the One Tonner, it was 40C at Riebeek. Too bad I'd bonked 40k previously... twas a bad day

I do that...

Repeatedly....

 went from B to E last year

Also started in B last year, I see from the results I was only a few positions ahead of you...

Bonked out from C near the Klipheuwel Silos, got passed by E close to Stellenbosch, unable to even hang onto their wheels for a few seconds ( on the downhill!?!) - was one of my more humbling days on a road bike.

This year I will hopefully be a bit fitter & wiser.
